iSeries 466MHz freezes when connected to dial-up connection

Same machine as previous post, different issue. When connecting to the owner's dial-up the inputs freeze usually after a few minutes of establishing the connection. Sometimes it's more immediate than others. I have to force a shutdown by disconnecting AC and battery power. (you know what that can do to a HD!) Config is: 466MHz, 256MB, WinXP Pro SP2. I tried to lessen the amount of running apps in the background because XP is such a resource hog I wanted all the available memory for the browser and connection. I even closed all processes so memory was 131MB and CPU was 4%. Also, when trying to test the memory with WINDIAG (MS Memory test) the machine freezes after booting the disk and loading the program. The "Loading" part followed by the leaders across the screen is as far as it gets, then blank screen. I'm thinking this ThinkPad is a piece for the archive shelf!

If I configure the connection in Hyperterm to the modem's port (Com 3) and type AT I get an OK.

I had a freezing problem like this on a desktop and the problem was spyware. I would recommend you do a scan with AdAware and another one with Spybot S&D.

Another possibility. I used to run a dialup using CompuServe Classic (still use it for mail). I found that CompuServe would limit the number of copies of IE that I could keep open at any time. This is a real problem with some web sites that open new IE windows with each click. After the 4th IE window opened, CompuServe would freeze.

Just a couple of thoughts for you.
