Windows 98 is such a poor product, I have to wonder why? But in any event, Windows 98 uses a FAT file system and XP uses the NTFS file system (normally). So you would have to format your hard drive first, then install Windows 98. Use a Windows 98 setup disk to get started with removing existing partitions, creating a new partition, and then formatting. Copy the Win98 (?) folder (the folder with all the cab files) from the CD to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (make these folders on your hard drive first). The run c:\windows\options\cabs\setup and install Windows 98.

If you have decided for sure that you really want to remove XP and replace it with Windoze 98SE, and if you have a Windoze 98SE install CD (as opposed to the IBM Recovery Disks), then you probably want to follow the advice provided by IBM:

Considerations for Windows 98 - ThinkPad 600, 770/E/ED

and then,

Windows 98 installation information - ThinkPad 600, 770/E/ED

You might also want to make reference to my draft instructions for installing Windoze 98SE on the ThinkPad 600X. Almost all the instructions should also apply to the ThinkPad 600, but you will have to make sure that you use the drivers provided for the 600 and not the 600X:

PKIFF - ThinkPad - 600X - Windows 98SE - Installation

Why 98E? Windows2000 Pro is the sweet spot in this machine. I've tried both and W2K is much more stable in the 600 series.
