I think I broke my LCD...
I took my 600x apart in order to install wi-fi antennae in the lid. I had actually replaced the LCD in this laptop last year, so I was perfectly familiar with the removal and reinstallation. After I got everything back together and powered it on, I noticed a horizontal gray line had appeared across the bottom of the screen, probably 10 pixels in height.
I'm thinking that I somehow damaged the LCD, but I wonder if there may be another problem. I have re-checked all of the connections and nothing has changed. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks!

If you determine you damaged the LCD and need a replacement I have either a replacement LCD or complete lid. I assume both the LCD and LCD with lid are good, but don't want to install them to check. Where were you snaking the cables between the base and lid? I didn't see any good spot to do that.

If the price is right Davemci I might be interested, might be the easiest way to figure it out. I routed the wires on the top of the cable chase that is beside the pcmcia slots, then up to the hinge on the right side where the flex cable goes. I coiled the wires a few times to give myself some slack, then ran them into the lid right about where the inverter is. It all worked pretty slick with the exception of the display problem. I'll take pictures if I take it apart again.

I'd let you pry the LCD with lid out of my hands for $25.00 shipped to NH. I got it with a parts machine that had a fried motherboard so I have never seen if it works, but it looks pretty good. A few light lid scratches but none on the LCD. PM Me if you're interested paypal works for me too.

You might try taking it out and reseating the LCD cables. Sometimes the cable connection doesn't make good contact (especially after they've been moved around) and some area of the screen doesn't get a signal.

I can help you out with HDD cover and USB Cover. I don't have a dead or working battery. I also don't have the hard drive caddy, but you didn't mention that. USPS Priority is $4.60 and if you could spare a couple of dollars for gas, I'd appreciate it.joester wrote:Hey Davemci:
If you have a spare machine, would you have some small pieces I need for my 600E... Namely the USB cover, HDD cover, and a battery - dead or not.
Maybe?

New LCD was exactly what the Dr. ordered. I'm sorry Dave, but I didn't have the camera with me when I replaced the LCD and I was anxious to see if that would solve the problem. If someone has a nice shot of a gutted 600x base and an empty lid, I can make some little lines in MS Paint.

For what it's worth, I have 2 dead batteries. Not sure what they're worth to you, but you're welcome to them if you're interested.

I want the batteries to re-fill them. It's a touchy process, but I have the means to do it. My current "dead" battery has a bad control circuit, so re-filling wasn't as successful as I had hoped.
I have a caddy, but lack the cover. Actually, I should post a picture of the method used by the previous owner to safely protect his data. Quite effective. I think I might be able to straighten out the caddy enough to use it. That should provide a mental picture of the HDD and caddy assy...

Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.
I would rather not reveal my source for a variety of reasons, but a quick Google search will bring up many sources. A little more than I pay, but should someone have the nervous twitch and desire to attempt it they can. You are completely responsible for whatever happens if you decide to try it. I will only strongly suggest that you educate yourself as much as possible and apply common sense and PATIENCE. Then make an adequate work area. A workbench with just enough room to open the battery up isn't sufficient in my book.
As far as the methodology for the rebuild goes, it's pretty simple and straight forward, but these lithium ion cells have a nasty habit of bursting into flames if not handled correctly. I have not yet had that happen, and plan to keep it that way. If it happens, I'm ready for it.
