How can one remove the 760XD battery? I've looked in the manual which shows only a schematic drawing. The laptop won't boot up, an error message of 301 (keyboard error) intermittently comes up, but no key is depressed. This model has the keyboard which is automatically raised when the lid is opened. With my 380ED when it wouldn't work I removed the battery and it started up normally. I have a boot disk for the 760XD and it ran from the A drive fine but, alas, I have no idea how to use it. The test of the hard drive showed no problem.

What I would love to do is to install Linux with a GUI but I have only 89meg RAM and there is the problem of installation since the CD won't load automatically on these old laptops.

If it's the CMOS you take off the palmrest which is held on by small philips screws from under the keyboard. To get under there simply push the screen latches away from you and lift the whole keyboard up, like the hood of a car. If it's the main then you'll see that when you lift the keyboard and it's self explanitory from there......This will help you select the CDRom so you can boot off it, it's a boot floppy- http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/download.html [censored] Small Linux, Puppy Linux and TinyMe (PCLinux).

As far as the keyboard error -
1. Go to the diagnostic menu screen by selecting Test in the Easy Setup menu.
2. Press Ctrl+A to enter to the advanced diagnostic mode.
3. Press Ctrl+K; a layout of the keyboard appears on the screen.
4. Check that when each key is pressed, the key's position on the keyboard layout on the screen changes to a black square.
Note: When the Fn key is pressed, a black square briefly appears.
If the tests detect a keyboard problem, do the following
one at a time to correct the problem. Do not replace a nondefective FRU.
Reseat the keyboard card cable. Replace the keyboard card cable. Replace the keyboard card assembly. Replace the video card. Replace the system board.
