755cx & PCMCIA

I would like to add my 755cx to my wireless network. I just purchased an ASANTE AL1611 pc card. I installed the drivers on my 755cx running win98 but I can not get the 755 to even see the card. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Specs:
755cx P90 75mhz 24 mb ram
Win98 (not SE)

That's a Cardbus (32BIT) PC card, you can only use PCMCIA (16BIT) cards in the 755 series.

I won't ask how you actually got the card into the slot. 3.3V Cardbus cards are keyed to PREVENT their insertion into a 5V PCMCIA slot.

The card is probably toast.

I had first contacted ASANTE Tech Support with this same question. They replied that their card would work in the 755cx. This convinced me that it was worth the effort. You would be surprised how easily the cardbus adapter went into the PCMCIA slot. I only used 1 lb. of butter and a small rubber mallet.

The card luckily still works though, just not in that machine.

ASANTE has since responded to my 2nd email stating that their card is cardbus and would not work with the 755cx! Amazing, huh?

Anyway, thank you for the correct answer on the first attempt.

PS I kept the ASANTE emails in case anyone doesnt believe me.

Trust us, the 755cx does not support cardbus. cardbus didn't exist back then.

The first IBM laptops with CardBus support were the PCI based 760's which includes every one except the C, CD, L and LD. I'm not sure if the earlier 560's had CardBus or not, but I'm pretty sure the 560X and 560Z do, and the 380XD was the first 3xx series ThinkPad to have CardBus support. I think it's safe to say most, but not every ThinkPad made after 1998 has CardBus support as well as a few made before.
