Don't pay more than $120 shipped and ideally substantially less. That is for a working unit, with a good screen, with only onboard memory or minimal memory (32 meg and 64 meg chips are of little or no worth), a 6gb drive or less, ac adapter, a cd-rom drive and perhaps a floppy drive, and all covers (memory and harddrive). No reddish tint to the screen either.

And assuming a good battery too, right? I just paid $34 each (shipping included) for "5000mAh" batteries. They appear to be more like 3500mAh however. Looking at the going rate for 256MB PC100 or PC133 low density memory on eBay, then figure anywhere from $25 to $50 per module. So a fully-loaded, 650Mhz 600X with 576MB of memory, a CDRW/DVD combo drive, an installed OS on a more reasonable 40GB drive, then you're looking at or over $200.

Many people value condition as well ... In addition to what Ray said above, if your 600X is in good condition (with all flap covers, no peeled paint anywhere, very less scratches, intact CoA), you are looking close to $200 (or more if your machine is maxed out).

I suppose it's pretty hard to find a pristine 600X now. What would a maxed out 600X be like? (what's the fastest CPU, max ram, any wireless solution?)

My understanding is that an 850Mhz CPU can be installed but you might need a Speedstep-enabled motherboard and/or perform some mods. Search the forums for 600X AND 850*, and limit the searches to the 770/600 forum.
Maximum RAM is 576MB. 64MB on board, plus two 256MB low density modules.
Wireless solution can be easy (PCMCIA card) or hard (MiniPCI with internal or external antenna). As an example of the hardest solution, see my page at:

I got a near-mint 600X and 600E for $55 shipped. They were being sold as-is, so I caught a break there.
The 600X in my signature is close to being completely maxed out. If I had the 850mhz MMC-2 processor and a 100GB 7.2K instead of the 80GB 7.2K, then I think it would be. It's got internal WiFi and bluetooth as well.

Supports WPA? Using with OS for that?

No mods needed on my non speedstep 600x.
On battery the CPU runs at 700Mhz.. on main power it runs at 850Mhz.
The only hiccup is that I need the FN F2 key stroke combo to get past the boot-up screen when on main power.
A 600 speed-step motherboard would solve this, but it really doesn't bother me at all.
It runs Winxp like a champ...wireless is with a PCMCIA card as is USB 2.0.
If I were to sell, I would definitely ask over $200.00 with the ugrades I've done.

This thread will make a good template for me to upgrade my son's 600X as he gets older. Right now it has the very basic PIII/450 with 256Mb of RAM and a old 20Gb/4200rpm HDD. But the shell is good to excellent condition with an still very bright LCD so the basics are there for when I get around to maxing this thing out. Right now he's 4 and doesn't need much, but they do grow fast, don't they!?!
