HD for 600X

#1 Post by joeked » Tue Nov 13, 2007 3:09 pm

My 600X 6GB HD needs a replacement. I'm considering two options:

1. Western Digital WD800BEVE (probably ATA-6).

2. Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 (ATA-7).

Both are 80GB/5400 rpm/IDE.

Are these drives compatible with the 600X?
Do I need a bios upgrade (current bios is IBM 11/30/99).
OS: XP Pro.

Thanks

If both drives are really ATA/IDE, they will work fine. You will notice they are MUCH faster than your current 6GB drive. Much quieter too.

You may need a BIOS upgrade. ALL of them are dated late in 1999 to give operating systems a hint about their ACPI compatibility. If you're already using XP Pro, and that install was smooth and easy, you've likely got the latest BIOS. Go into EZSetup and read the BIOS version there.

Thanks. I checked my BIOS and it's ITET49WW. The latest version is ITET55WW. Since my system doesn't boot I wonder if it is possible to upgrade the BIOS from a CD before I install the new drive.

Having worked extensively with the 600X, I know it does a check of the floppy drive for a BIOS updater diskette before other things. It may work from a floppy. I don't think it will work from a CD, unless your boot issues are later in the process.

It's worth a try, though, to be sure.

I have a TP 600X 2645-4EU with latest BIOS and upgraded to a Hitachi 120GB HTS541212H9AT00. Works really well...

Bought the 80GB Hitachi (actually the 5K100) and installed XP Pro. It works fine with the current BIOS so I haven't upgraded it yet. Thanks.
