I thought that a poll would be the most accurate way of determining the speed.

That depends on what you mean by bootup.
Windows will get to a desktop faster but you will still have to wait while it loads all the stuff in the systray before you can use it.
Linux takes longer to get to a desktop but once you get to the desktop everything is already loaded and ready to go.
Still from the power on button until everything is finished loading, XP is faster.

There are umpteen versions of Linux (I have 3 running) and they are not all the same. Roughly, though, the newer the Linux, the slower the overall startup. I tried Gentoo once, and it was fast, but it didn't work well for me, so I moved to SuSE 9 Professional. It works well, but is pretty slow.

Yeah! Linux is slower at boot up and that is the main reason I did not explore it! It is really a nice low cost feature rich operating system however! When and if they develop it so it can load everything in a more compact manner; I will try it!
But some Linux experts say that they can get Linux to boot up faster then Windows! They need to put it in the next release and I will then try it!
