600E Install the Modem

I was asked to install a new hardisk and OS in this and have everything working now except the modem. IBM's instructions with the driver advise checking which current IBM driver version you have and taking one of two installation paths. The check involves using an entry in the start menu. I don't have a Thinkpad entry there.

I have a default Microsoft driver so neither seem appropriate anyway. I've tried both paths but still end up with the Microsoft driver. The issue seems to be uninstalling this.

I've also tried the V90 upgrade recommended in another post. This fails to find the driver.

Uninstalling via device manager tells me this is part of a higher multifunction driver. which I think is the DSP. I can't do anything with this without it complaining that "setup cannot load the installer(mwci.dll)..."

I notice there are a number of posts on 660E and modems but my problem looks more basic. Have I missed installing something?

You haven't missed anything. Those instructions all assume you are upgrading. Ignore them and download and install the highest version for your OS.

You may have to go into control panel and use the "Add and Remove Hardware" app to find it. Sometime you do and sometimes you don't. Windoze......

I'm attempting to use IBM's latest driver found from their 600 download matrix

After whizzkid and carbon-unit's advice I've elected to use the Disk1 option (the alternative Oldwave looks like it is for non Crystal Audio users)

When I execute the setup it I get the message "Setup has detected existing Thinkpad Modem software. You must remove it before installing new driver software". According to the Weppage instructions the DSP applet should now pop-up and allow me to remove the existing software.
It doesn't.

The Readme is slightly different but advises using the DSP applet in Control Panel to remove the existing software before installing. There is none.

So it really looks as if I've missed out installing something that would provide the DSP applet.

Here are other things I've done/checked:

Tested the Modem (DSP) via Easy-Setup. It's working.
Tested via Ctl Panel/Modem/Diagnostics. It does not respond.
Tested via known good connection. Error 630. The modem is not responding.

Tried deleting modem via device manager. It's part of a higher multi-function device.
Tried deleting DSP. Cannot open properties (cannot load mwci.dll)

Tried deleting modem via Ctl Panel/Modems. Appeared to delete OK.
Reran Disk1/setup. Same error ie must uninstall modem.

Tried removing via Add New Hardware. In W98 this only an Add not a Remove. Result is "The best driver is installed"

Ran System File Checker. Found error in setupx.exe and reinstalled from W98 CD.

Somewhere around here the DSP Properties in Device Manager became accessible again.

My next option is to uninstall the DSP and retry the modem Disk1 setup.
But I still think I'm missing whatever should have provided the DSP applet.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Fixed this by copying mwci.dll from c:\windows\mww32\manager to c:\windows\system on the basis that while the missing DSP applet might have been quite happy to find it in MWW32, device manager wouldn't know about this and would search System.

This allowed me to remove the Thinkpad DSP via device manager without getting stopped by the "unable to load installer" message.

A combination of the download page mentioned earlier and the readme (neither is 100% correct) allowed me to reinstall. This time I have a Start/Programs entry for ThinkPad modem and can successfully connect.
