Can I install P3-450 CPU into an old P2-266 motherboard?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

Can I install P3-450 CPU into an old P2-266 motherboard?

#1 Post by wb0gaz » Sun Dec 09, 2007 10:19 am

I have a P3-450 CPU module removed from a very dead 600X (the CPU was good, but the motherboard refused to enable the LCD panel so the LCD panel moved to another machine that needed it, and so on...)

My question is this - can I install this CPU module into an existing P2-266 machine in lieu of it's existing CPU (I'd just like to get that machine running faster.)

Tks,

Dave

The P2 266Mhz is from a base 600 machine I assume.

If this is so..no you cannot..the form factors are not the same.
P3 is MMC-2..while the 266 Mhz is MMC-1.

The fastest MMC-1 CPU is 400Mhz...they can be found on E Bay.

This is a long shot... have you checked out the lid switch on your dead 600X? I had a 600E that wouldn't put out to the LCD. Did a search on this forum and found that stuck or broken lid switches are fairly common with this model. Poking at it might get it unstuck.

Thanks re MMC1 vs MMC2 - appreciate the info!

Lid switch - tried, didn't fix, but was a good idea...

Thanks!
