My 600 screen had acquired a reddish tint so I swapped in a 600X screen and it worked. Thereafter I put all the plastic back on and was about to screw everything down but the laptop no longer worked. Pushing the power button the first time would result in the lights flashing on but nothing else whatsoever. Shutting it off and immediately turning it back on would result in the lights flashing and the fan coming on, but again nothing more. No beeps whatsoever. I am about to remove the screen, but I don't think that that is the problem. And I can't figure out what changed between it working and it no longer working. Suggestions?

Hard telling, but it sounds like a wire shorted somewhere during the rebuild. Probably pinched somewhere. Take it back apart and carefully look for pinched wire or something along those lines.

Another possibility would be a screw somewhere that is too long and is shorting against the frame or circuit board.

It is not any screws sticking in too far. It is not the wire to the infrared port and related stuff. It is not the subcard, I tried removing it to no effect in respect to the problem. I likewise removed the modem to no effect. Same for the lcd and the invertor. That leaves some canned air to give it a good cleaning.

Try without the keyboard, if you have the keyboard still attached to the palm rest bezel. Even without the keyboad you should still POST and get the 8611 error.

Yes, tried without the keyboard too and without the LCD, plugin it into an external monitor. Down to canned air unless I am missing something obvious.

I know this is out of the blue, but.... Can you check or replace your CMOS battery?? This is known to clear up some error codes.

You could try reseating the CPU. I had the same symptoms on a 600E before I discovered that the processor had come loose.

Slight progress.

A dead CMOS battery was responsible for only the lights flashing upon the first press of the power button. But now I am still left with only the lights coming on and the fan starting. There is neither beeps nor lcd activitity.

I tried reseating the CPU unit to no effect.

If static, is the machine toast?

Did you try with one or no ram? Since it has the 32mb onboard it should boot and POST.

Evtl. your TP sleeps... the little switch above F2 works well?
