600X USB Not Working

I have a HD in a H-Speed USB 2.0 caddy. When I try to hook the external HD via the USB plug, but the laptop does not see it when you go to my computer.

I get ding and the window in the lower right hand corner saying " This devise can perfrom faster" "This USB devise can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. For a list of available port, click here".

When I click the window I get HI-SPEED USB DEVISE Attached To non-HI-SPEED Hub.

It goes on to tell me that the USB Mass Storage Devise is a Hi-SPEED USB devise and will function at reduce speed when plugged into a non HI- SPEED port.

Then it list USB Root Hub (2 ports). USB Mass Storage Devise and an Unsused Port.

The recommendation in the box says "The USB Mass Storage Device will function at reduce speed. You must add a H-SPEED host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance.

Can anybody tell me what's the problem. The laptop is running windows XP

There is no problem. The 600X has low speed USB. Close the warning box and just use the drive at low speed or get a USB 2.0 PC card if you need the faster speed. The card may not power the drive by itself. An external 5 volt power supply might be required. I tried stealing power from the built in USB port to supplement the USB 2.0 card but it didn't work in my 600X.

Apparently something is wrong with the caddy. I plugged it into a desktop PC and it's not being seen by the computer.

Sometimes Windows fails to assign a drive letter to drives in a USB case.

Select Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Storage | Disk Management

If the drive shows up there without a drive letter, right click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths

How long did you wait after plugging in the drive? The USB port is ver1.1, so it takes much longer to install a drive than ver2.0. This happened to me just last week when I thought an external drive wasn't being recognized by a 7-year-old Dell desktop. After about a minute, that drive showed up.

I got the USB port working. What I did was to delete the USB drivers and went on to the Lenovo site and downloaded the drivers. Everything is working fine now.
