Have I Got A Faulty Inverter?

#1 Post by jrudman » Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:08 am

Hi

My 770 had a very dim screen. The "brightness" switch would change the screen from dim to very dim. On the advice of a repair shop, I decided to replace the inverter, rather than the backlight since it was simpler and cheaper.
I've just installed a replacement, shipped here to the UK at considerable expense from a USA supplier. However, the problem has not gone away. I now find that if I push the inverter switch at right angles to the sliding direction, I can make the screen brightness acceptable, but if I release the pressure it goes dim again.

I'm not looking forward to the trans-Atlantic hassle, but have I been shipped a faulty "new" inverter? Is there anything else I might try?

cheers

Prob not what you want to hear, but the same thing happened to me before...Inverter cost me 19 US,then when UPS got it here the wanted another 20 bucks for brokerage......then I put the inverter in,and it would work for about half the boot up the dim out.....They replaced it no problem, but again when UPS got it here THEY WANTED ANOTHER 20 BUCKS !!!!!....at least this one worked....

I do find that you have to tighten the middle screw holding in the inverter, very hard....Its very easy to get at....just take the 3 little screw covers off(very carefully,so you can use them again..),down by brightness slider...take the 3 screws out.....now carefully lift where the plastic surrounds the LCD at the bottom, and slide it towards you....tighten the screw by the slider real well and try again....maybe try looseing it as well....my bad one would work until I put the middle screw in the Plastic by the slider...???...

If you want to remove the inverter, you have to remove the keyboard the get at where it plugs in.....(six screws on the bottom, four on top along the little Icon display on the keyboard, then 4 ribbon cables going from the keyboard to boards inside)....Very easy to do....

If you are replacing a 10L1161....than you can also use a 12J0445....more readily available, and usually a LOT cheaper(20 bucks)....

Yes,most definately the inverter...and try not to use the slider anymore...a few of us have kind of come to the conclusion that this may be what causes the failure......VERY common in the 770 series !!!

Later.....

Thanks Greg. I've already mastered the replacement of the inverter (sounds like I'll be getting lots of practice)! It's the replacement which is giving concern. I'll try the screw torque and see what happens.

I've found that the tightness of that middle screw can be critical.

I had a 770 where the screen suddenly went dark. I removed the cover for the middle screw, and loosened it a little. Screen came back. Loosened it a little more, screen went dark. I suspect there is a flaky connection in the PC card and if you put too much or too little torque on the screw it is lost.
