Hi

I thought l posted this yesterday but l can't seem to find the thread.

What is the smallest Thinkpad that l can use for e-mailing and surfing with a battery that is good for 1 1/2 hrs.

For "smallest", it's the 240/240X. For "lightest", it's the X60s with Ultralight screen.

For the cheapest it'd be a 600E/X with a new battery (provided you won't be surfing all day watching streaming flash videos).

The 240, 240X, X40 and X60s are much much smaller and lighter than the 600E/X though.

True, but surfing with a 10" screen is not fun if you have to scroll sideways al the time.

Best bang for the buck is the 600 series IMO

I agree but the OP was asking about size, but price. And the X4* and X6* have the same resolution as the 600 series, so the scrolling situation isn't any better or worse.

The best would be the 240Z with 10.4" 1024x768 screen. Same resolution as the X4*, X6* and 600 series, but the same size as the 240/240X. Unfortunately, the 240Z is very rare.

the smallest were the 235 and 535. They had a 9.4" SVGA screen, but were sold only in Japan, as usual. The PC110 was even smaller, but more a UMPC design.

The 240 was larger than the 235, but thinner.

I had the 240x for a while, but that thing was useless. The X20 was almost the same size and weight but had a larger screen and much longer battery time.

I think the X200 would be the smallest modern Thinkpad (11"), we'll see in a couple of weeks.

Of course I was aware of these tiny Thinkpads. But like you said, they were specially made for the Japanese and they are almost impossible to find in the States, which is where the OP is located. For internationally available Thinkpads, the 240 series is the smallest.

IMO, the X20 is much bigger than the 240/240X, as you can see in this photo (left to right: X40, X20, 240):

And the 600 series is even bigger than the X20.

.... and emailing and surfing are the other two requirements......lol.

Painowizard, did you see an S30 was just offered on Fleabay...... with two batteries, also a Transnote just sold for $175......

I would agree the 240/X is the one for light duty 2 1/2 hour on battery work. The X2X series would also suffice and are readily available. This is getting to be a theme for me today.....what's floating in the air?

I don't know if "the most diminutive" was the actual aim of the poster..... but then I didn't ask the question. I think they are aiming for something with a current OS that can do light duty since I wouldn't want to be stuck with DOS, 3.1 or W98 on the net......

I have been thinking about a transnote for a while, but what stops me from getting it is the display and the max. memory it can take - which takes me to the question:

how many of us would like to see something like the transnote again?

gator and pianowizard, I've searched for over an hour and can't find it. I held it in my completed watches for at least two weeks after it ended. It must have completed after the 1st or right after Xmas. It was offered by a pawn shop and I can't remember the username. Oh well, it went for over $275 with many bids. Didn't miss much, the photos where lousy......lol. I would have thought everyone saw that baby....... should have said something sooner.......

I shouldn't have said "just" because to me one month is "just". I went through 5900 "IBM Thinkpad" completed listings from the 12/26 and didn't see it...... "S30" is worthless but that's how I found it in the first place. It may have been in the description but not in the title and seems that advanced search -> completed items won't search descriptions, just titles... increadible.

Actually, it's good that I missed that auction. Otherwise, I would have won it and regretted it because I would have hated its XGA screen. But because it's such a rare Thinkpad, I would have forced myself to keep it. It would just collect dust.

Same, I let it go when it went into the insane-o-sphere. If I remember right it was missing the pcmcia door, that would have driven me nuts looking for that part......

I'm thinking about getting a 240. Basically i want a small laptop that i can store MP3 on permanently connected to an amplifier. Would the 240 be any good. I've seen one for sale without a hard drive, is it easy to get hold of one 80GB. Or is it too old and slow, i'm assuming they have an audio output.

The 240 has either the 300MHz, 366MHz or 400MHz Celeron processor. For playing MP3, any of them should be fine, but I still recommend trying to get the fastest of these because the computer is more responsive in general. Max out the RAM to 320MB and it will run Windows XP pretty well, and Windows 2000 even better. The biggest hard drive I've installed in a 240 is 40GB, but 80GB should work as well. Make sure you get a non-SATA drive.

I am not familar with the prices in the UK. Look up completed listings on eBay.

In the States, a nice 240 can be had for under $100US.

The 570e without the base!!! While I was at college I rarely took the base. I.bought this laptop because without the base I think it is the simply both the smallest and the lightest. Being as you rarely use the floppy and the CD/DVD, if you are wirelessly connected. I hope the fashion is going towards thin client technology were you synchronise and clear your data partition to you home server every night. If you're server is connected you could you could even create a wlan and throw your ultrabase away
