Intermitent sound from speakers

After a fresh install of win 98 and installing the IBM drivers, i keep losing sound from the speakers. I have eneter the easy setup and tested the audio and it appeared okay. Sometimes the speakers seem to work on start up, others they don't'.

I am struggling to pin down where the problem is. Idf any body has any suggestion they are more than welcome!
