600X SpeedStep question and other upgrades

I got a free a 600x model number 2645-8EU a couple months ago from a friend of the family. There was nothing wrong with it other than the OS needing to be reinstalled. Works great but I am looking to upgrade it and have a few questions.

I was looking to upgrade it from 500 mhz to 650 mhz. Then came across this thread and saw that a few people were upgrading to 850 mhz but it seems that most had the 600E. I was wondering all 600X's had speedstepping. Can I upgrade to 850 are there any issues or upgrades to do. How do I determine if mine has speedsteeping. I also have been searching for a CRDW for it can't seem to find any on Ebay. Anyone know where I can get one?

Also how can I upgrade the trackpoint to the T4 series. Is it just a matter of replacing the palm rest and plugs right in?

And what is the max memory size 512mb?

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I split out your post from the original thread as there's several questions being asked and I thought this would give your thread more visibility.

The 2645-8EU system came with a non-SpeedStep 500Mhz CPU. The only factory SpeedStep 600X was models which came with a 650Mhz processor.

The CDRW drive would be an Ultraslimbay design. Don't get that confused with an "Ultrabay Slim". Here's a good resource for Ultrabay differences:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraBay

You can either stick with a genuine IBM CDRW drive or buy a "bare drive" and transfer the Ultraslimbay caddy onto it. For CDRW/DVD combo drives I've used GCC-4240N models from eBay. Other models can also be used but you have to make sure that the connector on the back side of the drive is the proper one which matches the Ultrabay adapter.

Not sure what you mean by updating the trackpoint from a T4. Are you talking about the UltraNav (the touchpad)? If so, I don't believe that you can find anything which would fit the 600X keyboard bezel. The touchpad was not offered as an option for the 600 series.

Maximum memory on the 600X is 576MB. That's the 64MB that's already soldered down on the motherboard and two 256MB low density (16-chip) PC100 or PC133 SODIMMs.

Thanks for the welcome! Great site with A LOT of excellent info!

When I was looking over the Upgrade thread there was mention of upgrading the trackpoint. But I was looking at the 4x series and they don't look like the fit. But here is a quote from that thread.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong? LOL!!

Is there a way I can upgrade the processor on my 600x without speedstep? Do I have to replce the mobo with a 600E?

They used a Trackpoint cap from a T4x on the 600X (just the red cap, not the whole bezel and keyboard).
