755CX - works OK - Supervisory/BIOS password question?

I have recently purchased an old TP 755CX at a junk sale to add to my "collection" of old Thinkpads 
The 755CX works OK. Intially I thought there was no HDD but this had simply become disconnected. It looks like its a "3rd party" 2GB HDD rather than a "standard" IBM 1G drive - I guess the original caddy did not fit , so the HDD is just "pushed in" with no locking mechanism - but it still works OK.
Interestingly , the lithium battery also seems OK - not bad for a 13 year old laptop. I think it was last used in 1998 - so the battery is a least 10 years old. Likewise for the CMOS battery.
Anyway, at boot up there is a message (IBM I think rather than Windows) , which warns of "NOT to forget the Supervisory/HDD password" otherwise a new system board will be required etc etc.
As the CMOS battery is still good , I've not had to access the BIOS.
I have a simple question. If I boot to the BIOS and there actually IS a supervisory password requirement , can I just exit and reboot OR will I then need to enter the SP to get back to normal operation?? I think I'd rather wait until the CMOS battery is duff before I have to dismantling the 755CX
