First real post here, hope it is in the right forum and comes through OK.
While trying to install Linux on a 760XD without an external floppy I had been having problems booting install disks. I tried smartbootmanager, which booted the install disks but installed itself in the MBR and caused problems when I tried to install Lilo or Grub.
I then ran across this thread on the Puppy Linux Discussion Forum.
"How to install without bootable CD? (Solved)"
<http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 7af11384e5>
Near the end of the thread, poster deepcore provides a download of his method for installing from a cd-rom when your laptop can have either a cd or floppy drive but not both attached at one time.
The download consists of a zip file that is unzipped into a directory on the hard drive. Then a batch file is run to boot the CD. The nice thing about this method is that it can be left on the hard drive without affecting the MBR.
It worked very well on the 760XD.
Hope this proves useful to others with similar machines.
