I'm sorry for my poor english, but i'm learning

I recieved from my younger sister her "old" laptop. An IBM Thinkpad 600X with 380MB of ram, 30GB hard disk and a PCMCIA LAN card.
The problem was that it will not install Windows 2000 or XP.

Windows 98 its OK to install but when i am trying in all sorts of thinkable ways the same error appears.

FILE \$win_nt$.~bt\NTKRNLMP.EXE cannot be open
error 4

I searched the internet and found that the problems might be the memory och the BIOS.
The memory works fine! And the BIOS i cannot uppgrade to the latest cause my batteri is poor.

What should i do?? I also need lots of drivers, have ha lots of them already but still the graphics card wont work (run in 16 colors).

Not sure what the FILE \$win_nt$.~bt\NTKRNLMP.EXE is or means. As I recall, MS uses the $some_file_or_folder_name$ to indicate a temporary install from location. Further you state that you get video in 16 colors.

This would indicate that you are in fact installed and running windows, so it does not make sense you say that you cannot install windows.

A quick google for me revealed that the ACPI may be a proble, and to turn it off in your BIOS. That should be simple enough.

All the drivers you require for the 600X are available on IBM's web site.

I would suggest that if the windows 98 install works and you can easily run windows 98, do that and then run the 2000 or xp setup from within windows 98, rather than trying to boot from the install cd of either 2000 or xp.

I cannot install Windows 2000 or XP even if i install it from Windows 98. The same error appears.

as i can se it means = NT kernel multiprocessor

Did you turn off the ACPI in the BIOS?

Looking through some KB articles on Microsoft, they suggest resetting the BIOS to defaults, and checking RAM.

Have you tried the install with the base RAM the mobo has? IE, remove the extra RAM sticks you have in the system and see what happens with the base 64MB RAM.

MP would seem to indicate multi processor, however the basic XP or 2000 (pro) versions should support 1 or 2 CPU right out of the box.

Are you trying to install from a legit MS CD?

ACPI? How do i turn this on/off? BIOS i managed to enter som Setup like when i pressed F1 during start. But i wouldnt call it BIOS.

I removed my 2x128MB PC100 sticks and the same error appeared.

You cannot disable ACPI on the 600X. ACPI works very well with XP.

You NEED to update the BIOS to install XP and maybe for W2K. Get a battery and make the machine useful again, or find a thread here about doing it without a battery, but that's potentially dangerous.

The just boot from the CD as you've done before. After the BIOS update, it will go very smoothly.

So, the thing is that my BIOS is old? I will search for a fresh batteri then..
