Help with Keyboard problems TP 760XL

#1 Post by mjleon » Fri Feb 29, 2008 3:37 pm

After a long period experiencing problems with an old keyboard i decided to replaced it with a brand new unit after installing it TP start to work normally and everything seem to be ok, but a closer checking reveal that some characters were not working after pressing their respect buttons "O" "P" "L" letters, ":" "." characters and "0" and 9" numbers are not working even in windows or in DOS operational systems i tried to install a new OS i'm using win 98 i was trying to put a win 98 SE but beacause of characters malfunction i'm not able to perform a hard drive format and OS installation. Any ideas??? should i reinstall a new BIOS??? i'm working with version 05/21/98 HZET70WW, i ran an easy setup test to check other hardware and especially the motrherboard no errors were shown. I read somewere that there is a test or kind of a setup that can be perform on keyboards with some special commands, those any body know about it??? and how to perform it, please give some advice.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Anyway... down to business, My laptop had the same problem and the same problem keys as well. (what a coinsedance!!!)
Well, what I did to repair them was just to restart it!!! It was probably just a faulty startup or something, but you could try!!

Here is a link to help you; http://thinkpads.com/EZSetupKeys.htm

"CTL+K" will give you the interactive keyboard test.

Finding a good 760 keyboard is getting harder and harder......

Good Luck!

Dear dietpepsiaddict i already tried restart it but the problem remains there, i also pull out the keyboard tree times and then i proceed to reinstall it but the problem continues, i´m going to try some keyboard testing first and if nothing happens i´m going to used internal batteries on the new keyboard and install them on the old keyboard and see what happens but only after testing everything. I´m concerned about possible damage opening the new keyboard.

Thanks for the tip i´m going to try the interactive keyboard test and after that if problem continues i´m going to try replacing old batteries with new ones on the old keyboard to see if problems continues but only as an ultimate option.

Ok yesterday i tried everything i could imagine to see if i could get a solution to my keyboard problem, unfortunately the keyboard stills with the probleml, i think the problem is in the keyboard, like somebody say before it is very dificult to find a unit working 100%, so i'm thinking about working with external keyboard with one of those Y ps2 connectors for keyboard and mouse. That should help me with the typyng issue but i'm not sure if i can use an external keyboard to format and install a new OS, does anybody know if external keyboard can be recognized without problems under dos??? i'm not sure about that.

I've just recently installed an OS with an external keyboard attached and it went fine. Go for it.

Are all of the keyboards you've tried failing in the same key combinations? I wonder about the keyboard connector.

It was me who mentioned finding a fully working keyboard. I have 4 760's and it took several to get them all working properly.

Ok i knew somebody in this forum mentioned something about fully working keyboards and it's true it's becoming difficult to find one. Regarding the keyboards i tried the first one (the one i change it) with new batteries on it, didn't work no keypads and only the mouse worked, just the red point other mouse functions did not worked.
With the new keyboard the one that arrvied few days ago, has the problems i mentioned before, i tried changing ribbons between both units and the problem still and i tried to change the little board inside the keyboard between both units with same results so i presume that the problem is inside the sealed part of the keyboard, since i'm out of the US and it is very difficult to import more keyboards i'm going to try an external one at least know i can start the notebook before the new keyboard arrived i was not able to do that because of the faulty batteries.
