Under voltages

#1 Post by ChefJohn » Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:43 am

I believe that the IBM power brick is rated at 14 volt output.
What damage if any would result if you were to put only 12 volts through the unit? (keeping the amp rating at about the same as the specifications from the power brick)

Does the unit have a cut off point below which it wouldn't operate?

Sorry if this is an obvious question.

Thank you

Damage? Possibly.

I've seen someone do it with another laptop, not that I recommend you do. There is a cut off point somewhere of course.

I'm pretty sure the 'brick' is rated at 16 volts.

I ran a 600 for a few weeks (until I sourced a 'brick' on Ebay) at 12 volts - no damage or operating errors, but the 600 bleeped like crazy whenever there was a HDD read or write: it was flagging-up a low voltage supply error. I had to disable the sound as it drove me crazy.

I now run one of my 600's at 12 volts by stripping-out the internals from a duff battery and wiring 12v directly to the battery terminals.
It functions ok like this down to 10 volts, but I haven't tried any lower.
