This may help someone else with this error code. I've only just realised that my intermittent 08613 error dates from the time I installed Win XP and lost the Thinkpad config icon (and program) from the Taskbar. Under these circumstances the Trackpoint goes into an auto-enable mode and this sometimes causes a clash with the mouse. I had no other config related problems. I have always used a mouse with my 600E but with Win 98 the TP98 config program allowed me to disable the Trackpoint and I never got the 08613 error.

The latest config program is still apparently called TP98 for XP and is available from the Lenovo site - just Google Thinkpad Configuration Utility. After installation you can switch to "Disable Trackpoint" on the config screen

I'm sorry if this is well known in Thinkpad circles but it fooled me for nearly a year during which time I reseated the keyboard connector many times. I assumed this was the problem because I had upgraded my CPU to 450Mhz from 366 which entailed keyboard removal.

I thought this forum entry might save someone the cost of a new keyboard and perhaps help others on the Forum in the same way the Forum has helped me over the years. Thanks.

Why don't you just replace the keyboard?

That error is related to the trackpoint.

P.S.
But on a 600X i found that it can also give the same error if the connector for the keyboard which is solder in the motherboard have the pins dirty/rusted. I solved that cleaning it with acetone and a q-tip then i dry it with a hair blower.

If you read my posting again you will see that I have no need to replace the keyboard. There is no fault, merely incorrect configuration after XP installation. After correcting that I have no more error 08613. But I thought with many people putting XP on the venerable 600E and maybe preferring a mouse, it was worth passing on.

I think cmarti probably understood your posting okay, but he may thinks (as I do) that your 08613 error is actually caused by a faulty TrackPoint or a loose hardware related to the TrackPoint.

It sounds like you aren't using the TrackPoint at all, is that right? By disabling the TrackPoint entirely, you are preventing the error from showing up, but the hardware problem still exists. If we are right, then this isn't a configuration problem with XP, but a hardware failure that you are solving by changing a BIOS setting via the Thinkpad Configuration software. And normally on the 600 series, if you have a TrackPoint hardware problem, then you solve it by replacing the entire keyboard, which includes the TrackPoint with it. Of course, that only makes sense if you want to get your TrackPoint back again!

But hey, it doesn't really matter, as long as you are able to use your Thinkpad the way you want, right?

You may both be right and I have a trackpoint problem but provided I can keep on using my mouse without error 08613 problems I'm happy.
