600E - DVD Drivers

I'm having problems locating the drivers for my SR-8171-H DVD drive. I've searched for hours and only found one set of drivers. Here. The problem is I cant get them to install, nothing seams to happen once I have installed them, the DVD drive still says its using Microsoft Generic Drivers.

The light on the draw is flashing steadily all the time and whenever I click on the drive in My Computer I get a "D:\ is not accessible." message.

If anyone can tell me where I'm going wrong, or even where to start looking it would be most appreciated.

Your DVD drive shouldn't need drivers in a 600E running Windows 98 or higher. What version of Windows are you running? When your computer says that the drive is not accessible, maybe it can't read the disk you've got in it? If it is a DVD disk with a movie, you need to install a DVD player in order for your drive to recognize the disk correctly. If you are using a DVD-R or DVD-RW your drive may simply be having problems reading the disc.

I'm running 98SE, I've been trying to open the Window 98 disc (which is a CD) but that being said I could open it about 3 weeks ago.

Drives can fail, especially old ones... Try with another cd, if it still doesn't read start looking for a new drive.

try to boot on a floppy that will let you use the cdrom like the windows98 boot disk, if it works then you have a problem with windows. if it doesnt work from a boot floppy then the drive is bad.

Cheers guys for the help, I cant load it from a floppy as I don't have a floppy drive in the laptop :(

Any possibility it could be something to do the UltraSlim bay drivers? The drive also ejects every time on start up.

This probably won't help but it may be worth a try - download the IBM DVDExpress software from thinkpads.com:

May be, your DVD has wrong parameter for master/slave/cable select, if other drives works in ultrabay and your DVD isn't dead. Look for jumper under ultrabayadapter or firmware "cable select" or "master without present slave".
