600E - Can you tighten the hinges?

#1 Post by Cadellin » Sun Mar 16, 2008 3:04 pm

I'm hoping no-one has asked this before as I've done a search and found nothing, so sorry in advance if I'm repeating another topic.

I noticed the other day that my screen will no-longer hold itself up past a few degrees off vertical. Is there a way of tightening the hinges?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tighten the hinges, but you can certainly replace them.

EDIT: Please see where I recant this statement later in the thread...

I have nice tight hinges off a 600X (2645-4EU) I might be willing to part with. I haven't opened up the LCD on my other 600's, but they look like they should fit.

PM me if you're interested.

on the 600 i just started playing with it was super easy to tighten the hinges. loosen the jamb nut a hair, tighten the other nut up against the wave washer a bit and then re-tighten the jamb nut. took a bit of time to get the same amount of drag from both hinges so that the display/lid wouldn't twist while closing or opening it by holding it in the middle but for sure less time than replacing the whole hinge assembly.

i would think that the 600E is similar.

Actually, I recant my earlier statement. Zagnut appears to be correct. Tightening the hinges will require removing the keyboard bezel to get to the hinges. There are two nuts on there, and as Zagnut said, you have to loosen the outer nut first, then tighten the inner one accordingly.

I hadn't had a chance to play with the 600E Displays in quite some time. Infact, I used this as a reason to create a "How-to" video for YouTube. I will be posting 2 videos tomorrow on YouTube showing how to replace the entire Display unit. You can use this same process to get to the hinges to tighten them up. I will come back tomorrow and post a link to the videos...

Here are the links to the 2 videos:
Part 1 - Disassembly
Part 2 - Reassembly

@cadellin

It is advisable once you are satisfied with the strength of the hinges to add a drop of locktite to the outer nut

Really awesome both your video's.
