600E RAM question

#1 Post by SUSIEJO » Sun Mar 16, 2008 9:46 pm

O.K. I've upgraded ram on a 600E before but I can't remember what kind I bought. I just want to make sure I've got my info right.

I need--16 bit low density, 144 pin, pc 66 or pc 100, sdram, cl2.

Is that all I need to check for when getting ram?

Thanks!

PC66 or PC100 SDRAM is correct. If you want 256MB on a stick, it must be low density, or 16 chips total, 8 on each side. (Technically, it has to be 4K refresh, which nearly always means 16 chips. I think there are some newer sticks that have 8 chips that may work.)

To fit in the machine, SO-DIMM is the package type.

You want something compatible with IBM's part numbers 33L3069 or 33L3070. FYI, kahlon.com is selling that part new for $51 today.

I did an eBay search for you. Notice that 1-800-4-memory is selling a bunch of them with $39 "But It Now" or Best Offer. Shipping is free. I purchased from them and they are good. Try submitting an offer of $33 and see if they accept it.

Thanks whizkid for the info, I'll print it out so I won't have to reask this question later.

Thanks pianowizard, I put in a bid for $33 so now I just have to wait for a reply. That is a really good price, I hope they accept it. I am needing to order 2 sticks.

Thanks again!!

You might also want to put a query in the market place forum if your E Bay bid falls through.

These chips do come up and usually at a fair price. MY 600X and 600E memory upgrades were done with Ram I purchased here.

Thanks for the info, I might check out the market place forum next time, but my bid went through. I got two 256 sticks for $66.

Thanks for all the help!

New question,
If I'm buying 128 mb sticks, do they have to be 16 chip or can they be 8?

i'm on 600E with 256mb since my X60s broke down. My cousin gave this to me and I don't know much about it. It's slow.

can this thing handle 512mb?

It depends on the BIOS date. The most recent BIOS (I forget the number) can take a max of 544mb but as stated before the 256mb sticks HAVE to be Low density which means 8-little black chips per side. They can be expensive. I found mine at a laptop shop nearby for $40, which is about as good a price I've seen.

Good luck.
