After a lot of work replacing the keyboard on my 760 unit i finally got it to work, i then proceeded to install an WIM ME OS because i got a pcmcia cardbus and i want to use it in order to save files between a USB device (pendrive) and the 760 hard drive. The computer installs all device drivers for the card bus and it was instantly recognized by the system then i plugged the usb (pendrive) and it was recognized too and then after that a letter E: is added on my computer corresponding to the USB unit plugged, the problem is when i want to transfer files between the HD and the USB unit depending on files size (especeally those files more than 2,5 MB) the process is suddently sttoped and system crashes and a reebooting is then needed and the copying process is aborted. I have installed on my computer 64 ram of memory so maybe is not enough ram for such device i don´t know, please give some advice some possible solution other than upgradding ram memory, maybe some kind of software to do the job.
The TP only recognizes 1GB pendrive i tried 4GB pendrive and system enter on a non-stopping reading process and after a lot of time it crashes and stop the system .
I have an old zip drive unit and it works ok never crashes even with larger files but is installed on the parallel port and the process of taking the zip unit and install it on other machines is always a pain in the a..... took always a lot of time thats why i came out with the idea of using an usb cardbus 2.0 USB. Please help

I think it's more of a Windows ME problem than a USB problem. USB 1.1 should only be slow, it has nothing to do with how big the drive is. And of course, Windows ME is notorious for messing up all the time.

Is this a fresh installation?

Anyways, I would think adding more hardware would mess it up more, as you'd have to install drivers and such.

Anyways, I have a 64mb Windows ME machine as well (lol), so if I can find a 4gb drive I can try it out (pretty sure it'll work fine).

I am not really sure whether this is relevant for the 760 ThinkPads, but it might be worth trying.

If not already installed, then download and installed the ThinkPad Utility program.
Then in Control Panel, double click the power icon and select the Advanced Settings tab.
Finally change the setting for 'PCI Bus Power Management' to Disable.

I tried out already with windows 98 and the same problem was observed, that's why i decided to use windows ME and yes is a fresh installation, after testing on win 98 with similar results.

It was already installed but no PCI bus power management option is available on the advanced settings tab :(

After a lot of time trying to resolve my usb pcmcia cardbus problem i decided to format again so i proceed to reinstall the system. I decided to keep the WIN ME, i don't think it is a bad OS it just need to have more care and some knowledge of the drives you are installing on the machine, well back to the cardbus, this time after WIN ME installation i proceed to install the TP utility before anything else and then proceed to disable IRQ 11 (docking station) and decided to try the drivers already uploaded on the WIN ME installation instead of using those that came with the device card on a mini disk. After rebouting the system and having a closer look on the system manager i noticed a yellow interrogation mark pointing to some unknown device driver problem, but i ignored it, i plugged the usb unit and now is working ok it seems that sometimes it's better to used the drivers that came with the OS rather than those that came with the devices however seems that cardbus is working slower with this drivers but is better than having error messages and the system crashed all the time.

I know it's been 8 years or so, but for today, is there any PCMCIA USB card available for use in a 760xd?

I usually just use those $5ish Taiwan/Hong Kong ones from eBay (NEC chipsets are preferred), but note that they are 32 bit despite having a 16 bit pinout/look and will not work in a non-CardBus ThinkPad (I do not know of any 16-bit PCMCIA USB cards, too bad because they could come in handy on stuff like 755CX, 380ED or 560E)

The first generations to have CardBus were the 760E/EL/ED series; if you have a 760C/CD/L/LD they will not accept a CardBus card (AFAIK it won't even fit the slot)

The 3xx and 5xx series didn't add CardBus until the 380XD and 560X (I remember trying to get one of those cheap Taiwanese USB cards working on the 380ED to no avail)

Hello guys.

I got one of the aliexpress usb cardbus, it's on it's way to Chile, a long trip, about 2 months... anyway, i'm testing with a 3com lan Cardbus, and it's detected, but i need the right driver, and seems like i have to "activate" the 32bits for the PCMCIA ports, i'm getting the software for this, will be back soon with news.

Cheers

From what I remember, the Cardbus controller on that model only works on 32-bit mode on WIndows 98SE. Wint NT and 2000 only work at 16-bit due to driver and/or hardware limitations.

Win95 is ok, since they can use the same drivers as Win98SE.
However, I cannot help you much with troubleshooting, as my 760XD is long gone. :(
