Is the 390x limited to low density memory?

Currently running a PIII 450 Thinkpad 390x. Bought 2 256MB pieces of memory and couldn't get them to work.

After a lot of experimentation and google searching. It appears I am limited to low density memory for a 390x. Is this the case?

IBM documentation says the 390X uses PC100 memory and the Intel 440BX chipset; same as what's in a 600X. So I would say "yes, it does need low density memory". 256MB modules will need to have 16 chips on them (8 per side). Otherwise known as 33L3069 or 33L3070 FRUs.
