I have recently tried to install an "original" Thinkpad 4GB HDD - model DTCA-24090 E182115 HG.
I was planning to immediately reformat and install XP.
However , as soon as I booted , my TP600E started bleeping and the XP CD did not boot. I think I got a 174 error message - but I might be wrong (should have taken notes). I then tried a 6GB HDD which worked OK.
I guess the 4GB HDD is faulty - but I've not previously heard any bleeping from the speakers - usually clunking from the HDD and blue screens!!
Any thoughts on what causes the bleeping??
Thanks
600E - starts bleeping when install new HDD??
Indeed, I've experienced some bleeping when the pins didn't match in the past. Try to reseat the disk with care. It might help if you lift and tilt the laptop when inserting (try left/right/back and forward). Don't use excessive force, it should slide right in and you will feel a little bump when it is installed correctly.u.mac wrote:May be, the connectors didn't match (if hdd was inserted without the case and screws) or there is some trouble with faulty pins at the connector from hdd.
Also check if the pins on the HDD are all straight.
R,
I wish there was a serious successor to the TP570..
If that doesn't work, try typing "reset c:" or "resetc" (don't remember which) at the DOS prompt - you sometimes have to re-initialze the MBR with the 600 series.

I did have to straighten a couple of the HDD pins but they now all look OK.
Maybe I need to try some switch cleaner in case some pins are tarnished?
I think I did reseat the HDD correctly and I was using an original 600E caddy.
Maybe there is damage "behind" the pins (dry joint/cracked?)
I will checkout the reset c: idea
Thanks

Got myself a ThinkPad 600E with broken hinges, can I repair old hinges instead of buying new ones?
