PCI Mini Wi-Fi Card for TP600E
PCI Mini Wi-Fi Card for TP600E
I've got a Thinkpad 600E that I'd like to install a Wi-Fi card of some kind in. Can anyone suggest a specific make/model of card that would be compatible with the 600E that's running Windows 98SE.
And is my best bet to just swap out my PCI Mini modem and replace that with the Wi-Fi card? My guess is that installation would have to be the simplest, but are there other options (equipment).
If you have an alternate suggestion, can you provide hint(s) as to the ins and outs of the installation. I'm pretty capable, but can't express to having huge practical experience with the Thinkpad. General directions would be beneficial for whatever is proposed.

Anything that's not a MiniPCI card since the 600E does not have such a slot
. That leaves PCMCIA (PC Card) or a USB adapter. Personally, I've used Netgear MA401 and D-Link DWL-650 PCMCIA cards with Win98 on both 600E and 600X systems but never any kind of USB wireless interface.
Only things to watch out for is that the wireless card has the proper drivers for Win98 and that it supports whatever transmission system you are trying to access (802.11b, 802.11g, etc.). Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to install the card and you should be on the air without too many problems. Some cards need to have the software installed before you ever plug it in; others may tell you to plug in the card and have the install CD ready.

Old Linksys wireless PCMCIA
I have successfully used a Linksys WPC54G on a 600E running Win98SE. It has the correct drivers. Follow the instructions. This device is several years old now, but works fine.

Yes thanks, I see that somehow (operator error?) managed to conspire against me to field this question on the wrong (or less right) forum.
I did get some good guidance. I've elected to give the D-Link DWL-650 PCMCIA card a try, and I've scored one which is enroute to me right now. I don't anticipate any problems, but I'll try to post up some feedback on how it plays out for me. Thanks!

OK, swell now even more operator error, demonstrated by the double posting. Blame it on the box wine last night . . .
