Hey All!

Glad to be aboard as a new member.

I want to upgrade my 770Z to the nth degree---i.e. as far as humanly possible as regards the CPU, RAM, and a CD-RW and/or DVD+/-RW.

My most pressing need right now is a CD-RW and/or DVD+/-RW. Again, I want to do this to the nth degree.

OK, here's the contest...WHO has SUCCESSFULLY upgraded a 770Z---model 82U---CD-ROM drive to its highest, upgradeable counterpart, and how did you do it?

It is possible to use the DVD-RW NEC Optiarc AD7543 and any other standard slimline DVD-RW in the 770 series (see my signature). BUT if you do not want to solder, you will need the original IBM M a t s u s h i t a DVD-Drive with this FRU: 05k8885, because you must use the caddy from this drive.
The IBM Toshiba DVD-Drive (FRU: 11J8952) will not work, because the connector in the caddy is at the wrong place. The IBM Sanyo CD-Drive does not have a standard slimline ide-connector inside, so it does not work also.

You will either have to modify the faceplate of the caddy or the location of the LED and the switch-key of the drive.

Thank you for your response and the info. Besides the FRU that you mentioned, Cmarti used FRU 05k9066 in the thread that you referenced. Cmarti said that this FRU is a M a t s u s h i t a SR-8171-L DVD drive. So, is the FRU that you mentioned and the FRU that Cmarti used just 2 different FRU numbers for the exact same DVD drive?

Also, I would like to put the exact CPU that you're using in your signature in my 770Z-82U. Is this possible? If so, could you please give me the part number or other information for this CPU? I believe I would also need PowerLeap's CPU Control Panel to run this CPU wouldn't I? Right now I can't even run the latest version of Adobe's Flash Player because the minimum system requirements state that you must have at least a PII 450 MHz CPU.

I'm sorry that I'm peppering you with so many questions, but I'm desperate to get my TP upgraded.

I think these drives should be close to identical, but for your purposes, they don't have to be identical, they just both have to be the M a t s u s h i t a-style model. You are going to throw away the drive in order to upgrade it anyway, all you want is the caddy that contains the right plugs and screws lined up the right way, and either of the FRUs mentioned should probably work fine.

Yes, this is possible, but you may find it difficult to locate a PIII 850MHz in the MMC-2 form factor for a reasonable price. The CPU you want will have an identification code on it that starts with: PMM850... More info on these ID codes is available from Intel or from CPU-World. The key thing is that it has to be an "MMC-2" CPU module. Tom's Hardware has some pics and additional info about the MMC-2 modules.

With P III you'll need PC100 RAM (up to 256MB per stick) and - may be - you've to disable the internal 64MB memory.

Actually, that "internal" RAM is just another normal SODIMM. Its just a pain to remove because you have pull the whole machine apart. In my 770x (running a PIII 500), I removed the 64mb module and replaced with a 128mb. Then in the two easy access slots I put another 128mb module and a 256mb. I think this is the maximum RAM configuration.

FYI, I've purchased (from eBay) a used DVD/CD-ROM drive, FRU # 05K9014, which also should be the M a t s u s h i t a-style drive. I'll let you know if I screwed up or not by purchasing this FRU. From my research, IBM has about 4 different part numbers for the M a t s u s h i t a-style drive whose number falls into 1 or more of the following categories: OPTION/WITHDRAWN/FRU/ and ASM.

Thanks for all of the good info. CPU World is a great resource! And, of course, you are right about it being hard to find a PIII 850MHz MMC-2 form factor at a reasonable price. BTW, what would you think a "reasonable" price would be for that CPU...got any ideas?

It changes every year, and "reasonable" to me is not necessarily what the "market" value is. For me, "reasonable" would be around $50. But I think the market value is currently hovering around $80-$100. You can buy an entire used 600X laptop with a PIII 500MHz for $100 if you are lucky, so paying $100 for just a CPU upgrade seems a bit rich to me, regardless of the apparent willingness of the market to pay that price.

Thanks for the info. I just wished that IBM wouldn't change their FRU and/or Option part numbers every time the wind changed directions because it makes finding the P/N you need so convoluted. I accidentally ended up getting the Toshiba DVD drive (Toshiba Model # SD-C2002) you mentioned above instead of the M a t s u s h i t a DVD drive (M a t s u s h i t a Model # SR-8171-L)---and it's no wonder! The following are all of the IBM FRU or Option part numbers that I've found---so far---which are attributed just to the Toshiba DVD/CD-ROM Drive (and I'm including the one you mentioned above):

11J8950 > 11J8952 > 05K9014 > 05K8886

The drive I ordered, however, used FRU # 05K9014, so I thought this one was the M a t s u s h i t a per http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... JEK-3QGU6U.

Anyway, all of this was just for everyone's information on what drive NOT to get if you want to change the drive out of the caddy to put in a standard "slim-line" DVD+-RW/CD-RW drive.
