Display problem

Following replacement of a HDD which died without time to save anything (I know, I should have backed up!) I cannot get the screen display to full size as before. Details are: Thinkpad 600 with 640x480 LCD Panel. Original HDD 5Gb and replaced with new 20Gb HDD which is up and recognised without a BIOS update. Windows 98SE re-installed. Downloaded files from IBM site include: NeoMagicMagicGraph 128XD, Nmgc.drv,*vdd, NmgcVdd.xxd, NmgcDD.DLL
After much tinkering with settings the best result I can achieve is with screen area set to 800x600 at 265 colours. This leaves a black border of 30mm all round. Enabling screen expansion at all settings produces distortion. This OS was working fullscreen before.
Other posts here mention a 'Video features diskette' and a monitor file necessary and available at IBM but this seems to be for the 600E/X. Can anyone advise if I am missing something here - please.

Your display should be 1024x768 resolution.
Make sure you have set the display type to "LCD, 1024x768" in the Display applet (right-click on the screen image, and select Properties).
If you set the display to 1024x768 it will go full-screen. If you select anything else, it will go smaller.
I know there is a setting to get a 640x480 to display full-screen, but I don't remember what it is.
Hope this helps.

Hello Bruce, many thanks for your prompt reply. I have a problem here in that I do not seem to be able to reset the display type although I am sure I changed it at some time during earlier tinkering. Now, if I bring up Display Properties and go to Settings/Advanced/Monitor, clicking on Change opens a Update Driver Dialogue but I'm fairly certain earlier attempts gave me the option to change LCD Panel size.

Hi again, since my last post I have managed to find the option to change, however this presents another problem as it is asking for the 'IBM Think Pad Supplement File' which I do not have so I guess I need to go ferreting on IBM site again. Thanks again.

Here is the Supplemental File Diskette for the 600/770 series:
IBM document DSHY-3VQQS6 [oops, corrected URL 20 mins after posting incorrect link]:
Windows 98 installation supplement files - ThinkPad 600, 760, 765, 770
For all the rest of the files related to your ThinkPad 600, your first stop should be here:
Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad 600
It looks to me like you have not followed all of IBM's recommended steps during your installation of Windows 98SE. Some of those steps are listed here:
IBM Document MIGR-48VPPW:
TP General - Windows 98 Second Edition Setup Guide
But that shouldn't really matter. You should be able to get your video driver working correctly regardless. If you are having problems getting your screen resolution sorted out then I would recommend starting off by returning to a simple built-in Microsoft VGA driver or display adapter. This requires changing your video display adapter driver, not your "monitor". Don't worry about the monitor for now. If these steps don't work, then you can correct the monitor after. But if your display adapter is not correctly installed, then it doesn't matter what monitor you are using, you will not be given all the correct options to change your display.
So start with changing your video adapter:
Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Adapter -> Change
Select Next,
then choose to Display a List of All the Drivers in a Specific Location,
then choose Show All Hardware,
then choose [Standard Display Types] on the left
and choose Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
then click OK or whatever until you are finished installing the new driver.
After changing your video adapter to VGA, reboot. Turn off screen expansion (Fn F8 I think) and you should be looking at a 640x480 screen with black borders around everything.
Then install the Video Features diskette for your 600 model:
Video driver III for Windows 95/98/Me - ThinkPad 380, 385, 560X/Z, 600
Follow the instructions on that page. You shouldn't have to look for or move any strange files or *.dll or *vxd files. If you follow the direction on the download page, all the files you need should be in a folder named: "C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY".
After you reboot you should be able to change the screen resolution to 1024x768. If this doesn't work, then let us know and I'll post instructions on correcting the monitor stuff next.
Phil.

Hello Phil, WOW! many thanks for all that. With the holiday fast approaching and other committments it's going to take me a while to implement all your instructions but I will keep in touch - eventually.

Hello Phil, The main three links you gave me I had previously visited, picked over the relevant bits for my situation and downloaded device drivers etc. After this I followed your instructions to change video adapter. This has taken me full circle to where I started and my Display Properties/Settings now shows: IBM Thinkpad 1024x768 LCD panel on Display Adapter (VGA)
giving me the option of 2 Colors or 16 Colors and a screen area of 640x480 pixels ?

Mmmm...that's not right. Maybe I didn't give you proper directions. Your display adapter should read: "NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD" after you use the Video Features Diskette to install your video display adapter driver.
So instead of it saying "IBM ThinkPad 1024x768 LCD panel on Display Adapter (VGA)", it should say "IBM ThinkPad 1024x768 LCD panel on NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD".
It looks to me like you have installed the correct monitor or LCD driver for your display, but that you have not managed to get the video adapter driver installed correctly.
Are you sure that you followed the instructions listed under "II. Installation instructions" and then "Windows 98" on this page?:
Video driver III for Windows 95/98/Me - ThinkPad 380, 385, 560X/Z, 600
Try to do this install again, starting with step one, downloading a fresh copy of the file, and expanding a fresh copy into an empty directory, then following each step and not skipping any. At step 16 you will reboot. At that point, your display adapter should read correctly. If it doesn't then let me know what it says. If it does, then continue with the rest of the steps indicated to change your screen resolution and colour depth.
Phil.

Well ! When I read your last post I thought - deja vu - my first post revisited, but there is a lesson here. Because the TP is not set up I have been downloding from IBM to my desktop PC and then transferring via data link cable. Three successive attempts to re-install later - (it was not possible to follow IBM's 'Installation for Win98' beyond step18, step 19 select colour depth, resolution is not an option.) However at the third attempt, Bingo-it happened. I confess it was only on the third attempt that I downloaded the vftpi89m.exe afresh although step 19 was still not an option, but after a reboot all was well. Thankyou Phil, you are a gentleman, I desperately needed that for my wife to take to a college course tomorrow and I didn't think it was going to happen. I still have some other hardware to re-install so I could be back, but it's useable for now. Thanks again, All The Best for 2005

Hey, that's great. I'm glad it finally worked and I hope it continues to work correctly down the road! And all the best to you in the new year as well.
Phil.
