my kid gave me a 760xl, new battery, cd-rom, no floppy, 32mb, 2.1 gb hdd, win95 -- i'm looking for your advice -- it works great, but i'm wondering if i'd be better off buying a newer thinkpad, or should i upgrade this one? - i'm limited financially, which is why she gave it to me, but i need something i can use for wi-fi -- but i didn't know it had win95 -- i'd be willing to take the plunge and install a linux system, since i'm leaning that way anyway, but not sure if the computer meets the system requirements
thanks, roky

welcome to the forum:-)
on my 760e debian ran very well using fvwm as window manager
most emphatically not either gnome or KDE. They bring even much
faster machines to their knees.
wifi will also work using ndiswrapper: you will be compiling yr own
custom kernal, not hard the debian way.
happy to help further as needed. And don't overlook tuxmobile,
good collection of reports about different linuxes on 760s.

Welcome to the forum!!
I moved this to the Legacy forum, where it belongs.
I am pretty sure that you can still you a wireless card with the 760 series...though it might not be the fastest.
If you are looking for an inexpensive upgrade (being that you are on a limited budget), might I recommend a 600E? It is lighter, faster, and can handle WinXP...PLUS, they can be found for around $50 shipped on eBay....

My <brag> new 760XD, with 64Mb ram (Thanks, Victor!) </brag> is running Windows 98se, and keeps trying to load the drivers for a Linksys WiFi PC card from the docking station hard drive. The internet & lan settings all appear to be for that network, so apparently it worked well enough for the owner before last to use it that way.
Windows 98SE is pretty fast, and ie 6.0 is still up to date enough. Is there any software available for Linux?

thanks much for the help -- after thinking it over, decided maybe i should have just a little bit more computer, before the eventual upgrades -- particularly when my 760xl is running win95 -- so took your advice and bought a 600e(366, 130mb, 6gbhdd, win2k, dvd/cd-rw, wi-fi) -- it sure wasn't $50, but really wanted the cdrw -- i plan on using this for a while, so i like that i can upgrade this, do my own work on it, which is what my finances dictate -- and i can sell the 760(with its bag, matching printer and new battery
so i'll probably wind up back in the other forum, but wanted to say thanks -- roky

I'm a bit late, aren't I?
Well, that thing can definitely handle Dar(m)n Small Linux and you can buy a
DWL-G650 because it works perfectly with DSL.
I'm a bit late though...
