DVD burner for 600x

#1 Post by kado » Sun Jun 01, 2008 12:18 am

I want to get a DVD burner for my 600x (500mhz, 2645-4eu). I searched the topics here, and from what I read it seems I need to get an external drive with under-buffer run protection, a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, and I don't need one that writes faster than 4x or 8x (faster won't be utilized). I don't want to modify any hardware to get an internal one to fit in the slot my CD-Rom drive is in now, which someone here described doing. I found one supplier who has an internal one (a pricey $225), but it only does DVD rewritables, not DVD-Rom (strange?). External is fine, and I might want to get a 2nd hard drive to replace the CD-Rom drive.

Has anyone had success with any particular external DVD burner? Is any off-the-shelf one going to be fine (with the buffer under-run protection) ?. I found an external (USB) Memorex 16x (write), which also does double layered disks for $50.

About the USB card, do I need one that has the power adapter hole in between the two USB slots? Both types seem to be common. It's a shame the only card with dongles I can find is $50, while the others are around $10-$15. I'll probably get the cheaper one, as I don't see needing to burn a DVD while online (my WiFi card won't be able to be in there at the same time...).

I can sell you a nice burner with a USB 2.0 card for $40 shipped.
Here's some pics of the burner.

I wanted to let anyone searching for the same thing know I got a NEC DVD ND-6500A shortly after I posted this several months ago. It fits internally, replacing the CD drive. I just slid out the CD drive and slid in the new DVD drive (while in standby...) It has worked flawlessly burning DVDs, including DL media - no coasters. The computer (2645-4EU 500mhz) plays DVDs perfectly in full screen mode without any skips, and the picture is as good as my TV. (I read a post previously where someone doubted this computer would play DVDs flawlessly.)
