Since my post, I have had some limited success with my 760XD. I have been able to get it to access several CDs and even to upload data from them; however. my PC will still not access most CDs. I do note that I have been switching them from my other computer loaded with XP (my Thinkpad uses 98.) Perhaps this creates a conflict. I still cannot get recognition for the floppies, although all the testing indicates there is no problem with the floppy drive. Nonetheless, I suspect that I have, indeed, damaged the external floppy, hence the problem. I cannot write to the CDs because the drive is not able to do so. I have yet to find a CD-RW drive which is compatible. I was hoping that I could attach an external drive or a flash drive to do this through a USB adapter in the PCI slot and in the past I have done so through the floppies: no luck.

760XD- ACCESSING CD AND FLOPPY DRIVES
The floppy drive I got with my 365ED doesn't seem to work with my 760XD either. The connector is the same, but are they compatible?
What's the part number on yours? Mine is 41H8228, FRU no. 41H7445. I can't find any reference to it on the internet, but JD's used thinkpads has several other drives for the 760XD and others, but they don't seem to deal with the 300 series.
I can't find much on peripherals and compatibility on thinkwiki.org. Is there a way to look up a specific peripheral there or on ibm.com?
As a last resort, you could check the part numbers and order a drive that's garanteed to work with the 760XD. If the problem turns out to be something else, you'll have a backup.
Have you tried reading commercial CD's? Were they scrached? Have you cleaned the drive? What about the CD drivers?

BOOKWORM,
I am away from home for a couple months, so I cannot check the number on the external floppy drive. However, I solved that problem by reloading my Windows 98. Now I can access and use the portable floppy. I am still having problems with my CD drive. I must access it as "audio" first using a music CD; then, without turning it off, I can load and read a data CD. Something weird. Anyway, if you can get to it, use win98install.exe (I think that is the name) and reload your system. My other programs were still there and I was able to use the floppy drive.
