I took off the palmrest/keyboard but wasn't quite sure how to remove the metal shield beneath that. I assumed the processor is on top and not on the bottom...

And just so you know, there is a fair amount of disassembly involved in replacing a 770 series CPU. An inexperienced person can do it, but you have to be patient and careful. I would set aside 2-3 hours if you've never done it before.
