240 onboard memory is dead!

Hi,
The 64MB on board memory of my 240 400MHz is reported non functional in memtest and in ibm diagnostic tools.
My options:
1. Replace motherboard for another 400MHz, but difficult to find in UK.
2. Replace motherboard for a 300MHz easier to find, but sort of downgrade.
3. Question: will be possible to cut the contacts of one of the chips of the 64MB onboard memory, and use just a 256MB chip in the ram. Is just a reduction from 320MB!!
Any comments or suggestions?
Cheers!
