Updating a 600X

#1 Post by derke92 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 3:16 pm

Hi All,

I'm back again looking for help.
I have just bought a 600X from ebay, just a few miles from where I live. I will not be picking it up until monday evening so I don't know the serial number yet but will let you know when I have it in my sweaty palms. It is 500Mhz 128Mb other than that I know very little.

Reading through the old posts I noticed one saying about max memory and HDD's.

I have my eyes on a 7200rpm drive on ebay and would like your opinion on it's suitability. Also what is the max memory? This one has got 128, which needs to be increased, so can you help please?

If any of you have any advice on setting it up, in any way (bios etc) I would be very grateful.

Regards,
Derek.

Update the bios first; see http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... TLQ2L.html

The Hitachi drive should work fine.

Memory limit is two 256 MB PC-100 low density modules plus the onboard 64 MB. IBM part number is 33L3070. These can be pricey and if you are running Win2K or older OS, 256 MB is probably enough. Two 128 MB modules will be fairly cheap.

Hi BillP,

Thanks for the reply.
Don't know if I have sent this twice so please bear with me.
I'm losing the plot I think.

I will put in an offer on the drive and see what happens and then I will look for some memory. I know I will have to be careful with the memory as I have seen the other posts on the subject.

Thanks again,

Derek.

FWIW,
I have XP running on a few 600's, and 256 will do fine. I'm typing this on a 600X I just put internal WiFi on. Still tweaking the antennas, but it works pretty darn good for an "older" laptop.

A 7200 RPM HDD and bumping the RAM will prove to be a pleasant upgrade I'm sure.

One of my 600's has only 192MB RAM, and it does OK.

Updating a 600X

#7 Post by derke92 » Mon Jul 14, 2008 3:57 pm

Hi All,

Thought I would let you know that I have just collected my 600X which was on ebay. It was advertised as 50Mhz, which I assumed was a typo and he meant 500Mhz.
Now I have got it home and type in the number on the IBM site ,
2645-5FG, I find it is a 650Mhz.

Getting Bios battery error 161 & 163 coming up so can't get in to the BIOS to check. Is there a way I can get in please?

Quite happy with the purchase now although I need a HDD, caddy and cover, as well as the BIOS battery, which I have just discovered. Can't have it all I suppose!
Better get back on to ebay and see what I can find. Got 256Mb stick earlier with IBM serial No 33L3070 so that is one step to getting it going.

Better go play with my new toy now I've got it.

Regards,

Derek..

Nice deal! USD$50 for a SpeedStep system is a pretty good deal.

You should be able to access the BIOS by holding down the F1 key while powering the system up. Continue to hold the F1 key until you get the Easy-Setup (BIOS) screen. Your system looks just like the one I picked up a few months ago:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0233885286 (650Mhz 600X w/o hard drive - $56)

Good luck with the system!

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reply so quickly.
I have just got in to Bios and noticed the PIII 650/500Mhz and wondered if it was the speedstep.

Now you have confirmed it I am well happy. Paid £25 GBP for it, but it looks like you have already seen it (?). You were pretty quick there.

So if it is a SpeedStep I assume, from previous posts, that I can go the whole hog, so I will hang on until I can find a 7200rpm HDD. Just missed one earlier (drat) so will have to keep looking but I'm half way to more memory.

I will keep you posted on the developments, have a good day.

Derek.

Given your description of the "50Mhz" typo and knowing where you are, it wasn't too hard finding it on eBay :) .

Definitely install 2 x 256MB low density (33L3069/33L3070) modules. It would be well worth it. Hopefully you can find some locally for about £15 each. Look for Micron MT16LSDF3264* or Samsung M464S3323* parts and make sure they have 16 memory chips (8 per side).

Hi Ray,

I had better be careful in future otherwise I might lose a few bargains if you are checking up on me

I got the 33L3070 for £10.39 GBP which I thought was a very good price and I am waiting to see if he can get hold of another for me.
Thanks for the Micron and Samsung part numbers that will be a help. Got my eye on a caddy and cover then it's just the HDD. I suppose it is worth waiting for the right one, 7200rpm, as I assume it will make all the difference.

Can't wait to get all the bits together and build it up, got to do something now I have retired. :D

No, you will not be able to install a SATA (serial ATA) drive. An IDE, aka, PATA (parallel ATA) drive is what you need. There's several on UK eBay at the moment. Plug this into an eBay search box:

7200* (laptop,notebook,2.5) -external -usb -sata -serial

if you are really set in getting a 7200RPM drive. Personally, I find that 5400RPM drives are plenty fast for me. Substitute "5400" for "7200" in the string above to locate those drives.

To explain the search a little bit more:

Appending "*" to a text string will match any characters that follow. In my example, "7200*" will match "7200" and "7200rpm". Strings inside parentheses is considered an "OR" search, meaning any one of those terms will be matched. Prefixing a "-" in front of a string means that those terms will be excluded. Thus, my search is for any auction which has in the title:

7200
laptop OR notebook OR 2.5 (for 2.5", the size of a laptop drive)
does not have the words: external, USB, SATA or serial

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reply, I didn't think I could but, like an idiot, I put a bid on a sata drive. Hope someone else puts a bid in or I'm stuck :( .

I tried typing the script you sent into the ebay search box five times and it came up with nothing.
I assume it goes into the ebay search box Ray? You should know me by now, I have to be led by the hand.

If you think a 5400 drive is quick enough then I will be guided by you and go for one of these instead as even I can find these on ebay. :D

Starting from the UK eBay home page:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/

plug in the search string: 7200* (laptop,notebook,2.5) -external -usb -sata -serial

at the top of the page and click the Search button. You should get around 78 hits. On the left side of the page, click the "Drives / Storage" link and that leaves 6 auctions. If you then want to search for 5400RPM drives, change the "7200" to "5400" in the Find search box. Verify that the search will be limited to the Drives/Storage category (to the right of the search box) and then click the Search button. There's 97 hits at the moment.

I've played with a couple of 7200RPM drives and didn't really notice any significant difference to warrant the 1.5x to 2.0x price differential. As I don't use my systems for any heavy database searches, nor do I mind that it takes 40 minutes to backup an entire drive (instead of say, 30), I haven't missed having more 7200RPM drives. Certainly, if you can get a 7200 for the price of a 5400, then by all means go for it.

Also, be sure to read the entire auction description. Some people will not put "sata" or "serial" in the main title but will mention it in the body of the auction :) . If in doubt and the seller provides the drive's model number, Google that and see what you can find. Most of the time you can believe the collective knowledge that has been posted to the internet :P .

Ray I am going up the wall. :x

I thought I could see what you were about but I have tried doing what you said and get no results.
I have put it in the search box, the address bar, I have it put after the ebay bit you typed on the post, I have put it in just about everywhere but the right place.

After about 25 attempts I am losing it big style. :x

Lets start at the begining with your words "plug in the search string". Exactly what is "plug in"? And do I put in the address bar the ebay uk address as you showed on the last post? :?

I know I'm 'computer thick' but I am beginning to think I am just plain thick!!!!!

If you can explain it again for me I will be eternally grateful.

Go to the Ebay UK homepage, as posted in Ray's message above.

Select (click on) the "computing" category.

In the search box, type the following without the quotations (you can copy and paste too):

" 2.5 pata "

Use the search refining side bar on the left to whittle down the results.

Joe

FWIW, I got a whole bunch of items that weren't hard drives when I tried Ray's approach too. No offense Ray, there's an easier way.

Refer to these three screen grabs:

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/uk_ebay1.jpg (Main eBay.co.uk page)
http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/uk_ebay2.jpg (result from first general search)

If you get anything different from this, please let me know and I'll try to figure out what's going wrong.

Ray ,

I did exactly that the very first time you sent me the original post on the subject and got nothing.

I just coppied your screen shot and still got nothing, so I don't know what is going on.

At least I don't feel so bad now, because I thought it was me screwing up, but now I have tried this and got the same results I am a bit happier. :) Don't know why you get one set of results and I get another :?

Hi Ray,

The info you sent to me about the memory was
Micron MT16LSDF3264. I have just located a
Micron 16LSDF3264H CL2 and wondered if it was ok to use if I can get it? :?

I have found out why that string you sent is not working. If I type it in without the read speed I get lots of hits. It is because the read speed is not in the gallery description, and not always in the full description, so I have to search it out on Google to find the specs. :)
So there was nothing wrong it is just that the description is not complete! I am slowly getting the parts I need to build the SpeedStep up so should only be a week or two before it is running.

Hope you are keeping well, regards,
Derek.

That Micron part appears to be correct. The ones that I have seen lately usually end with "..3264HG-10..." or "..3264HG-133...", signifying PC100 (-10) or PC133 (-133) rated modules. The CL2 rating most likely means that the module is a PC100. PC133 CL2 is available but it's not that common. If you want, PM me the details (auction number, web site, etc.) for the source of that module and I'll take a look.

@derke92: Attempted to respond via email but message was rejected (Remote host said: 550 RCPT TO:<d*****@t*****.co.uk> Mailbox disabled).

The Micron MT16LSDF3264 on the lower right is the correct module you would need for a low density 256MB stick.I believe that the Kingston KVR133X64SC3/256 is on the lower left and will NOT work in a 600X since it is high density (8 parts on the module).

Hi Ray ,

Thanks for the reply, I have only just seen it, been a bit busy last few days.

So you reckon it might be worth a punt if the price is right, as long as I can use one of them that is all I care about.
I will have a scout round the ebay site and see if there are any others on offer, but I doubt it.

Can't understand what was wrong with the email address. The ISP server was down yesterday but it was alright on monday. But there could have been a problem as I noticed I did not get any emails at all on monday, usually get a load of junk mail, but nothing so I can only think it it was something to do with the ISP.
If you want to try a test email feel free and we will both see if it is working for you.

Regards and thanks.

Derek.

Hi All,

I have finally got my hard drive and I have been trying for two days to get the OS on it. I am trying to load W2K, the same as I installed on the 600E but it will not go in without problems. :(

I get into the installation and I am asked to put SP2 disc in. I looked for it but could only come up with SP4, which states it has all the previous updates on it, but when I put the disc in it will not load it and rejects it. :( :(

I have had an odd message, now and again, that NTLDR is missing.
Looked it up and couldn't make sense of it :?

I have since moved on to getting the message to 'reformat my hard drive' but when I press the relevant button (F) to format it takes over two hours to reformat 1%, haven't got the patience to find out how long it takes to do 2%.

I guess I must be doing something wrong or, my guess, the hard drive is a bit iffy. I noticed a jumper on the hard drive and I have tried it with and without the jumper to no avail.

The hard drive is a Fujitsu MHV2060AH 60Gb 5400 read speed.
Not sure if the jumper should go in a certain place as I do not have the 'knowledge' so can any of you wonderful people out there help me to resolve this problem please? :?:

Regards to all,
Derek.

You should run the drive without a jumper. To test the drive download fjdt_700.zip from www.fujitsu.com and add the unzipped executable to a DOS bootdisk (www.bootdisk.com). Run the quick test first and if it works ok, try the comprehensive test.

Thanks BillP,

I have run the drive without a jumper and I get the format thing come up.
Out of interest how long does it take to format a drive?

I haven't a clue how to do the DOS thing on to the laptop that I can't get the OS on.
Any chance you could explain please?

Again thanks for your feedback,

Regards,
Derek

Formatting might take an hour or two I guess. The very slow progress you noted earlier is not normal.

The Fujitsu app runs in DOS and the best way to run that is with a floppy drive. You didn't mention if you have one but I think it's a 'must have'. It is possible to make a bootable CD and work from that but it's a bit more involved.

Hi BillP,

Thanks again.

I copied the zip file you told me about, then went to my laptop bag to get the floppy out and, guess what, I haven't got one.
I could have sworn I bought one weeks ago but obviously I haven't. :?

I HAVE ONE NOW! :D

Got it off ebay today so should be with me in a day or two so I can have a go at the floppy and see what happens. I will let you know if all is well, or otherwise.

Regards,
Derek.
