I would go to device manager and delete all the sound devices - then reboot and let them reinstall.

Did you hear sound from the palm rest speakers while running the pcdoctor tests?

Funny this should come up...
My 600X (WXP) just lost the sound, and Windows found a "new audio device", but cannot locate drivers.
According to Lenovo, the drivers are part of windows.

Missing sound with XP, and comment on SpeedStep Applet

First post here. I have two 570E units, and a 600X (2645-9fu), with all currently on XP-Pro. In each case, I had to load the Windows 2000 sound driver from the Lenovo site to have any sound. Early on, I tried a Windows 2K upgrade over Windows ME, and Audio was fine, then a Xp upgrade over 2000, and again audio was fine. But, doing a clean, full Windows XP-PRO install left me without audio, until loading the 2K sound driver. Now, on audio levels, it may only be my imagination, but the level of sound "seemed" louder after installing the "onscreen utility" for controlling volume with FN and pg-up and pg-down keys.
Regarding the "SpeedStep Applet" not being necessary in Xp: Following a clean/full install of XP-Pro on the 600X (650 unit), the indicated cpu speed was only 500 mhz, no matter what I tried. The solution was to load the Applet, and I now had the full 650 mhz operation. This is just my experience. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. Sorry for the late response, had to leave unexpectedly.

All installs from IBM 600x site. No I did not hear sound while running pc doctor tests! I have done all suggestions posted here so far. Still no sound. I have reloaded everything more than once.

I have Crystal Sound fusion installed. No flags in device manager.
I have not installed the config utility or windows install supplement from the IBM site. Do I need these?

Getting back to the PC Doctor audio tests for a moment and I apologize if you're already gone through this before....

If you select the Interactive Tests/Internal Speaker test and do not hear a continuous tone, make sure that the audio system is not muted:

- press the Fn+PgUp key combination to increase (un-mute) the volume; Fn+PgDn will decrease the volume
- press the arrow up and arrow down keys several times to alter the pitch of the sound

Selecting the Diagnostics/Other Devices/Crystal Soundfusion(tm) test will only cause a single "beep" to occur. Again, if the audio system is muted, you will not hear anything in this test either.

If you still don't get any sound out of your system, then try connecting a set of headphones to the jack on the right side of the system and see if that port is working. If it is and you still don't get any sound from the speakers when you remove the headphones, then you may have some hardware issues.

One of the things could be that the ribbon cable going to the speakers has come loose. Remove the keyboard and bezel assembly and insure that the small, square-ish plug (about 1/8" x 1/4") is firmly inserted. You should also make sure that the Sub Card (when that plug is inserted into) is attached correctly. Sometimes all you need to do is remove the plug / card and re-insert them.

Another problem source could be a broken headphone jack. There's basically a switch built into the jack which cuts off the speaker when the headphones are plugged in. If that switch is broken, no sound will come out of the speakers.

And finally, there could be a basic problem with the sound chip on the motherboard.

If you can't get any sound out of the speaker / headphones after making sure that the audio system is un-muted, then I don't think that there's any way you are going to solve this problem with software (drivers).

Thank you rkawakami,

I have checked and audio is not muted. Headphones don"t work. I agree there are other hardware issues.

Will let you know if anything changes.

Thank You

SOUND IS WORKING !!! Up date. This laptop is not connected to the net. I was downloading the files from IBM site and Microsoft to my desk top and then putting files on floppy or CD to install them on my laptop. What I found was that some of the files were not complete.
Windows Media Player 9 series was 635 on the disk I made. The down load size from Microsoft was 13.3. Don't now why this happened. Checked everything and reloaded them. Thanks to all for your help!
