TP 600 USB drive problems

#1 Post by shady » Tue Dec 21, 2004 3:04 pm

Hello
I am experiencing problems since 2 days with my USB Harddrive (120 gig WD) which is built into an ADS Technologies case. My TP will only recognize the casing and the controller in the case but not the HD. I tested the HD in a Dell PC and it worked so I'm confused. When I plug it in, the task msgsrv32.exe freezes and I have to stop it by hitting ctrl alt and del. I'm running Windows ME.

Another problem:
After my TP was too slow I upgraded the RAM to 192 megs (I replaced one original 32 megs IBM stick with a 128 megs Kingston PC 100) and sometimes it'll only recognize 160 megs.
Please help me...otherwise I'll open my window and someone else can pick that p.o.c. up in my front yard...
Thanks...

Is the ADS outboard case conected to an external power source? I'm not aware of any laptop that provides sufficient current from the USB port to drive a desktop HD.

The memory problem is probably beacuse the new Kingston PC100 memory isn't playing nice with the existing PC66 memory. Do you have the latest 600 BIOS installed?

it is a 5.25" case so it has an external supply but it is still not working. the drive is spinning and so on but it'll only recognize the case (or sometimes not even the case) and tell me that the drivers aren't installed but it doesn't need any drivers under ME

the BIOS update might be a good solution but I have to check for it

Just for grins, I would see if installing a Win 98SE driver would help. You should have one on the CD that came with the housing.

Hope this helps.

USB HDD

#5 Post by JimmyD » Fri Dec 24, 2004 9:25 am

Wanted to add, I set-up R-40 with a 60GB ext. USB connected HDD. I went thru the inst. about five times, each time the end result being different but never correct .
Anyway , it turned out that the polarity from the pwr. adpter was incorrect. Even though the corrector was not marked and would connect either way, when I reversed it everything was well and functioning properly ?
I'm ofcourse refering to the pwr lead coming out of the pwr. adapter going to the HDD enclosure.
Prob. no help, but it was frustrating at the time.

I gave up ;) I ordered a 80 gig Hitachi HD for my Laptop (hope it'll work but it should after all I read in here) which means I have to reinstall Windows which might fix my problem. If not I'll go to Wallyworld and kick their butts for selling me that piece of crap not long ago

the power connector is a 3-prong connector so I can't plug it in the wrong way. but thanks anyway

ok formatted my 4.8gig HD, could connect my external drive ONCE!!! then the error appeared again. so I think it's windows Me which causes the problems.

Do you think a 80 GB Hitachi Travelstar should work in my TP 600? I read some threads and they said "sure, no limitations", is that true?

And if that new drive works I'm going to install Windows 2000, XP is too colorful for me I think...and to slow and spyish ;)

I have a suggestion for the RAM problem. Try switching the modules around. I have run into the same problem when some RAM registers at a lower rating. I have just solved this by flip floping modules into the other slot/bank. Hope this helps.
