noticed that of the numerical keys, only 5, 6 were working -- after taking the keyboard out to have a look, noticed that the 2 middle screws on the bottom were 19mm, not the 16 specified in the manual -- noticed that the screws might extend up to the keys if too long -- to test, i reassembled using the 19mm screws, problem remained -- removed the 2 screws, keys all worked fine

unfortunately i had already ordered the new keyboard, but i need it anyway cause the left clicker is very shot(was using mouse left-handed) -- but maybe this will save someone else an unnecessary purchase

Excellent detective work! I had a similar issue with a 600E last year:

That keyboard was working but felt "different". The keys in question had a slightly shorter travel and there was a slight hump in the keyboard. After swapping in the correct screw I found that the Fn key was dead so I had to change out the keyboard anyway.
