770ED and SP2 = Dark Screen

#1 Post by Guest » Fri Dec 24, 2004 3:14 pm

I have a 770ED running fine with Windows XP.
If I install SP1 or SP2 - upon reboot the Screen is Dark. I know XP loads OK, as it responds to the keys shutdown sequence.

I have not been able to find any updated Trident video drivers.
I tried forcing VGA drivers by running msconfig with basic video boot - to no avail (it boots OK and displays OK in Safe Mode to make this change)

The only fix is to restart in Safe Mode and delete SP2.

Any one has any ideas on this?

Thanks

I'm running XP Pro SP2 on my 770ED and 700 without any problems. I did a clean install rather than an upgrade, perhaps that may be the difference.

Did you get the latest drivers from the Thinkpad driver matrix? Did you follow the instructions for upgrading to XP? It sounds like your backlight is turned off. Downlaod the latest configuration utility (as well as all the other drivers) and check the power settings. You might need to hook up an external monitor to run in normal mode in order to get this straightened out. Use Fn/F7 to switch between LCD and monitor.

Good luck!

Thanks. This too was a clean XP install - and it is only upon an SP2 install that the backlight appears to be off - your idea of an external monitor is good thanks
