Hello,

I have a ThinkPad 600X with Win 2000.

When the cpu temperature gets higher, then the fan start to spin. I would think that after the cpu temperature get colder, the fan should stop. But the fan is not stopping. I check at the moment the CPU temperature with Mobilemeter. The CPU has 38 degrees and the fan is on!

I heard about same problem with 600X and Win XP. The fan is not stopping, after it starts.

Is there anybody with a 600X and a working fan control?
Any advise is welcome.

More information:
It is a 600X with Speedstep motherboard and CPU 650 MHz.
BIOS version is ITET54WW.

I made several tests. First, after booting the fan is not running. The fan starts at 60 degrees. Then it cools down to 38 degrees. But the fan does never stop.

Ist aber noch nicht ganz fertig, bei meinem 770X gehts aber bei dem
IBM-Lüfter (bei dem anderen natürlich nicht, weil der fest an den USB gelötet ist).

WARNING: 600 & 770 series support not yet finished. Fan control works on my Thinkpad 770X with the IBM-fan (not the selfmade one, because it is hooked up to 5V USB and runs at 100% permanently, but the original fan is still inside, too). Temperature refresh does not work for me (use MobileMeter instead).

This is also not the question. I want a proper fan control under Windows 2000, without additional software.

I know it was always a problem under Windows XP.
But I thought, the fan control under Windows 2000 was OK.

But maybe, I am wrong!

No answers! So I read a lot of articles about this!

The "Fan always on" problem is under Windows 2000 and XP.
But is it also under Windows 98 with APM?

Very good question.

I don't know anything about W2000 - but XP is installable with APM (without ACPI). W98se is also installable with/without ACPI. Maybe you can so "solve" the problem under W2000.

Quick+dirty... use the sleep-Mode at 38°C... 30sec. later (after awake) the CPU-temperature is <40°C and the fan stops. But at ~46C° the fan turns on...

IMHO there was no fan-bug in older BIOS-versions - but IBM tells us... click that there was no other versions of slave controller versions... but I'm very, very sure, that there were other versions ...and I'm also sure, that the slave controller version was not downgradeable... only the BIOS was downgradeable.

If there is anybody out there with older BIOS-files and discriptions for 600x please let me know.

I think the fan worked proper in earlier versions.

Makes it sense, to do a BIOS downgrade to version ITET45WW?
But the slave controller is for all the same IHHT10WW.
Who controls the fan?

Anyway, I will do the BIOS downgrade. Come back later.

But the early versions may have other problems "not XP ready...", maybe large hdd are not recognized.

Fan, battery ... are controlled by "BIOS slave controller".

IMHO the slave controller isn't downgradeable - but I'm sure, that there are different versions in earlier BIOS-packages.

I made the downgrade to ITET45WW -> The fan runs as before!

Reason: Slave controller is the same.

Conclusion: Only solution to control the fan is by software. So hopefully we get soon a working Pfcontrol.
