600X (2945-5FU) Crashed After Windows Update?

This machine worked for two years running W2K. I was doing the Windows Updates and when it was finished I rebooted it and it BSOD with a ntoskrnl error. I tried rebooting with last-known-good and that worked, but a straight boot would always BSOD. I booted a Win98 floppy with SpinRite on it and ran that. It found no hard drive errors. Sometimes a boot would give a registry error BSOD versus a ntoskrnl BSOD, not consistent. I decided that Windows was corrupted, so I formatted the HDD and reloaded it using the IBM W2K CD that came with the computer, and it still BSOD when I rebooted. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version from IBM. Still blue screens when reloading Windows. I replaced the CMOS battery. No change. I downloaded and ran PC Doctor from IBM. It reports a system memory error. I removed the 256Mb stick I had installed and reran PC Doctor and it still reports a system memory error.
What has gone wrong with this computer???
TIA for any advice.
