MiniPCI Wifi Card for 600X? FRU 27K9934

#1 Post by derke92 » Mon Aug 18, 2008 2:27 pm

Hi All,

Just saw something concerning Intel mini wifi cards in this forum but could not find the answer.

So can anyone tell me if I can fit an Intell pci wifi card into my 600x please?

The card is FRU 27K9934 and when I look it up on the IBM site I cannot find it related to the 600x. I am going back there now to have another look but if you know the answer please enlighten me.

Regards,
Derek.

The 600X doesn't have built in antennas, so those will have to be added for it to work, and even then it's often less effective than a removable card.

The key to whether it will fit or not is the height of the card, as I have tried some cards that were just too tall to fit through the cover. They would fit if one removed the system board from the case, but that's not always acceptable.

Do you have the dimensions of the card?

The 600X BIOS will not block any card, so if it's installed, it should work.

Hi Wizkid,

Thanks for the reply.
with what you have told me I don't think I will bother trying this I will stick with a PCMCIA card that just plugs in.

Thought it was worth asking.

Thanks again,
Regards,
Derek.

I recently got a 600X and installed an internal Intel mPCI wireless card. Mine is an Intel 2915ABG, and it works just fine. I took out the modem card, along with the wires and jack, and stuffed in the WiFi card. He is correct regarding the internal antennae, there isn't one, so you have to add it.

My mPCI card came from a dead laptop, so I was able to just rip the antennae out of the same notebook. Most notebooks have two wires for the antennae, one black and one white. I am just running with the white one, I ran it back and forth where the modem wires were and get a "good enough" signal. It is definitely not as good as the old laptop. I'm sure if I took the time to carefully run both antennae behind the screen (where they should go) I would get better reception, but I haven't taken the time to do so.

It is definitely more work retrofitting an internal than just using an external card.
