TP iSeries 1721 2627-721 boot problem

I've been trying to repair a ThinkPad i-Series 1721 2627-721. It powers on but there is no display. The power led lights up as does the battery led on the LCD. The machine will occasionally boot if the f12 key is repeatedly pressed after the power button is pressed. It boots to the start screen and then dispays a screen with the two error messages: 0251(Time and date incorrect) and 0271( Default config used).
Also a red message pops up warning there is no save to disk file and the save to disk option is disable and to check the manual.

If I enter CMOS and set the time and date and display boot device the machine boots up fine to Windows XP sp3. All the system devices work perfectly. When the machine is powered down the problem starts over. I changed the 3v backup battery and still no change. The main battery is apparently dead.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

What happens if you remove the main battery and just run it off of the AC adapter?

I tried starting it without the battery. Still will not boot. After getting it to boot after several tries it still goes to the error messages 0251/0271 and the cmos is cleared. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is there a way to upgrade the BIOS without a battery?
