USB port on Thinkpad 570 not working

I bought the Ultrabase from someone on eBay and installed Windows 2000.

The USB port on the laptop itself doesn't seem to be working quite right. The one on the Ultrabase works. I plug in my Sandisk flash drive, and its light is lit indicating it is getting power but not recognized. I tried a Kingston flash drive. Not recognized either.

I went into BIOS but did not see anything about USB.

Help!

I've found that many (if not most) flash drives have a hard time making a connection with the USB port in the 570 because of space constrictions. Check to see if the drive is fully inserted.

No, it is should be making a good connection, because I am using a short 3 foot USB extension cable.

Update:
I found two thin USB flashes that fit not needing the USB extension cable.

Still no go.

Windows just isn't automatically installing the drivers for it. The port is now not powered.

I can't get it to see the flash drive as a USB Mass Storage device. It seems to think that it is a USB controller.

I tried deleting the drivers and rebooting. Windows sees that there is New Hardware but it doesn't go and get the right driver for it.
