i just got a thinkpad 240 free from work, but the hard drive has a lot of bad sectors and i want to replace it. i've been looking online at a few hard drives, but i can't find a lot of info on compatible ones. i'm considering the Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 40GB ATA-6 2.5in 5400RPM. anyone know if that's compatible. any one have any suggestions or comments...i'm looking for nothing bigger than 40gb and less than $80.
thanks,
kristin

Take a look at my posts on this topic for my 765D over the last few days
I don't know for certain about the BIOS in your machine, but mine certainly couldn't handle the Travelstar 40Gb drive native!
I managed to get around the problem, but it would be a lot easier for you not to have the same problem. If your model is (and I am not sure) earlier than mine, I doubt the Travelstar is supported unless you do what I did.
You might be better off with a much smaller drive - I think the orignal came with a 6.4Gb drive, so similar should be supported. Then you don't have to worry about BIOS Overlay software.

I believe the 5k80 should work fine. Make sure you update the bios befoe doing anything. I believe any 9.5mm drive will work.

Yeah. I put a Travelstar 5K40 in mine. Works delightfully.

I have upgraded my TP240x disk drive from 12GB to 40GB.
The new drive is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 Model number: HTS541040G9AT00 (ATA100, 5400rpm, 8mb cache)
This new drive from Hitachi runs completely silent.
