As my first post here, i'd like to say hello to everybody.
This appears to be a great forum.
I am new to windows my Specks: ThinkPad 600E 2658D Intel PentiumII 363MHz 288MB/RAM
Questions:
Ineed this machine mobile I purchase apparently new battery in eBay, apparrently because it shows
100% charge when full, the problem arrive in the discharse around 50% it goes sudenly down to 5%
taking a loss of 2 hours. Is there a solution for this or it is normal and what it is the time IBM
says the 600E should last, I have been tested and the best I got is 2.6 hours.
Maybe some one have Power Schemes preference that want to share I will apreciate it.

There was an error in the 600 series with reading battery life.

Or, you were scammed and the battery is dead.

EDIT: Reread the post. 2.6 hours is about all you can get on a 600. I think I read it correctly this time. >_O

Over two hours is pretty good.

A couple of suggestions - make sure your bios has been updated to the latest version.

My 10 year old's 600e says it'll get about 2 and a half hours, but I've never tested it. He says he has, and I have no reason to doubt him, but without first-hand observation who can say for sure.

I agree, over 2 hours on a 600 series is good. It might just be that Windows just isn't reading it right. I think that someone suggested using the the BatteryMaximiser program....and I would definately agree.

I had a 600E that wouldn't use the battery until I installed the Batterymaximiser program...

I have installed it but it doesn't do anything like newer models. For me it gave inaccurate readings as described above. Dropping from 98% to 5% then shut down. If you disable timers in desktop properties it would last longer but not much. Mind you I had a worn battery. As stated Battery Maximiser not compatible/supported. It doesn't give you any information on battery status for example capacity, first used, or serial numbers.

I have fallow AKelly728 told me with the exemption of the BIOS no luck with my model and perhaps I was looking forward for that to much work.
But I did the easy one MaxiMiser with probably give me a bit of improvement but not much.
Now the good news 3 hours 6 minutes running iTunes at 260Bit radio with screensaver at 1 minute , this experiment was using Mr.Valero suggestion the one I include for all of you :

The problem is software, but it is not in the firmware or something in the thinkpad, but it is in the program of the microcontroler in the battery.

The solution for the problem is easy: Recycle the battery, but...not as IBM says. The microcontroler does not let you discharge all the energy from the bat, so I dont let the microcontroler of the bat comunicate to the thinkpad, and by this way I can discharge all the bat, and then get full charge.

The way to eliminate comunication is very easy: there are 4 pins in the battery, the 2 in the middle are the microcontroler comunication to the thinkpad, so before put the bat in its hole, I put 2 little papers over that pins, and I get power on. Now you dont know when the bat is empty, and the computer will power down in any moment, but you can discharge completely the bat.

You need to do this some times to recover the capacity lost.(at least some of it) A warning: when you charge it, dont use the papers, or you could overcharge the bat, and it is the worse thing you can do to a battery.

I have brought the battery from BatteryRefill.com two (2) years ago and still holding charge. I was getting over two and a half (2 1/2) hours on my ThinkPad 600E. As the battery ages and getting used a lot its depreciates. Other words as it gets older and use a lot, the battery doesn't give expected running time. I remember the the first refilled battery I brought from BatteryRefill.com lasted four and a half months (4 1/2) on over two and a half (2 1/2) hours everyday and then it quit. I called BatteryRefill.com and told them the problem and they sent another refilled battery and this one last two (2) years so far. Their prices are reasonable and have good service. I'm recommended BatteryRefill.com to several of my customers and friends, too.

No... normally the battery does't jump down. But if one or more cells from battery are defective the result is as you wrote.

The TP 600 series have issues between BIOS an battery. If you install MobileMeter you'll see much data: capacity (from manufactor), real capacity, actually load... and some more interesting things.

My 600x get at 700mhz/544mb - idle - less than 10Wh... the mainbattery has 44Wh - so the machine will run near 4,5h... the 30Wh ultrabay-battery adds 3h... 7,5h - but only idle

The "normal load" is ~15W/h... so it will work up to ~3h (~5h with added ultraybay-battery.

I think, your 600e should need some less power than my 600x and so I would say, your battery is bad! On the other side... you have less RAM and more swapping... maybe wifi. Take a look with MobileMeter and you'll see.

Haven't tried it yet. Too many irons in the fire lately. So many, I forgot I was going to try this.
