770? error code 192
770? error code 192
I'm in the process of upgrading my Thinkpads and am experiencing a 192 error code which is not listed in my hardware maintainance manual. It occured when I swapped in a 300mhz cpu. Does anyone know what this means?
BTW, I successfully upgraded my 770X to 500mhz as per the instructions here. What an excellent site; thanks!

If I remember right....You're trying to swap in a PII 300 in place of a 233Mhz aern't ya...???.....Doesn't work...!!!...The 233 is actually kind of PI-PII,not specifically a PII like the 300Mhz CPU.....Been there,tried that...if its a 266 machine,you will have no problem up to a 400Mhz...MMC-1

Greg,
It sounds like you are right as I found I get the 192 error when I try the 300 in a 233 mainboard; however, when I try it in a 266 it gets no error; it just hangs after the memory count and will not go any further, not even into the bios setup. I also tried swapping DC-DC cards with the same outcome. I'm beginning to think I've got a bum [eBay] cpu.

yep... That was me who tried the offdie cache 300mhz cpu. Kept giving me the 192 error and I had to work around it. Finally I got a 400mhz CPU from an eBay auction (brand new, sealed) and it's been working like a charm. My 770 outperformed my dad's 770Z now! Not to mention DVD is alot more smooth. Oh, and i started with a 233mhz model.
p.s. I did have a work around that allowed me to start the 770 with the crappy 300mhz processor in it. Had some quirks though, one being that you can't restart the computer. You can hibernate, or shutdown and turn it back on... but you can never restart it. quirk 2 was that to start it up, you had to let it boot, give you the 192 error, and push the reset button, then start it again. Somehow then it would work. (don't ask me why?)

The following cut and pasted from www.ibm.com

(Fan error.)
1. Measure the voltage of the backup battery. If the
voltage is not correct, replace the backup battery.
