ThinkPad 600 Restore Disks - Help!

#1 Post by toolguy1964 » Sat Jan 08, 2005 4:07 am

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain a copy of the original restore disks for the ThinkPad 600? My cousin gave me his TP600 since Santa brought him a new one and he said he lost the restore disks years ago in a move. This TP is so bogged down with crud it is running very slow. I would like to just reformat the HD and reinstall the original software and get it back to it's original condition. Any help would be most appreciated!
Many Thanks!

Win. 98 is preferred but if 95 is the only one available, I can use that.
Thanks!

Try e-bay, Amazon auctions or Yahoo auctions.

On my 600E which arrived w/o software, (Well there was a restore disk but I did not have the install key so it would not work) I was able to do a full install of Win-98SE from an upgrad disk (I already had win-3.1 lying about so it would accept this clean install as an upgrade.

Of course the modem, audio and video (other than straight VGA low rez) did not work, I do not recall if the track point did or not

However I was able to go to www.ibm.com, click on support, or downloads, enter the type number where requested (it is on the bottom label) and download a full set of drivers for my computer, Modem works, Video works (One step down from max resoultion) AUDIO. This beauty has CRYSTAL AUDIO, less you pay very large bucks for an audio card... It does not get much better than Crystal audio, Track point, and since I set a BIOS password (Power on) the thinkpad configuration disk that allowed me to show a "Startup" screen (password request screen" that instructs the tecnician trying to clear it to return the computer to ME! and report the theif to the local police!

Every thing not included in the standard Windows distribution is either downloadable from microsoft as an update (Critical update in many cases) or www.ibm.com for hardware specific drivers and the like.

While on www.ibm.com download a users manual and a maintance manual as well. Kind of handy pdf files. I strongly suggest downloading the maintance manual to a DIFFERENT computer however... The reason should be obvious 8)

Restore KEY ???? Never needed one with mine ....

You can get one from IBM for a charge, Free if it is warranty still. That's how I got a new set for mine.

If you find one on ebay make sure it is for your machine type and speed - very important - and the OS you want to use.
